Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The recent cold front had been a welcome weather pattern as far as Zoe was concerned, and she was very grateful for how things had turned out today - it was sunny and breezy, and just cool enough that no one would pass out from heat exhaustion. Hopefully.

Beneath the blue and gold streamers and balloons, tables had been set up with drinks and food, including an entire table of moddable different ice cream flavors. As always, there was a stack of nametags set down next two signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and one listing rooms and roommates for the new students.

[OCD is up! Have at it! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Well, the last two times Jonothon had signed up for this sibling program hadn't turned out to be total disasters, no. And so he'd gone ahead and decided to do this big sibling thing one more time.

And that was why he was here, of course, nametag fastened to his bandages as carefully as possible to keep any from tugging out of the way, keeping an eye out for somebody by the name of Madison.

Madison was wandering around the picnic, trying to figure out what the deal was with this place. From her conversations on the shuttle, she had been thinking it was some kind of juvenile detention center but now that she was here -- it certainly didn't look like one.

She reluctantly stuck a nametag on her green t-shirt. Then she smooth down her short blue skirt and glanced at the papers in her hand again. She was looking for someone named Jonothon.

Nametags, nametags everywhere, and not a one that said- Oh, wait. There she was.

Jono nodded Madison's way when he finally spotted her, and he made his way over. Before anything else, he noticed a weird sort of tingle itching around the back of his head as he got closer, but he dismissed it as nothing and made a point to ignore it, just like that.

//Madison?//

Short and sweet, as his introductions with Fandom's newest tended to be. It seemed better to sort of ease them in to his voice, at first. He knew better than to pretend he was simply mute, by now. They were going to just hear him speak eventually anyhow.

A picture would have been great. Kyle was good at identifying people by picture. Today he had to go without. He planted himself near the roommate listing, cupped his hands around his mouth and called out every few minutes. "Luke Castellan? Anyone know Luke Castellan?" Chances were he was mispronouncing the surname.

Luke walked up behind Kyle and tapped him on the shoulder. "Castellan, actually. But you almost got it right."

Kyle didn't take being caught by surprise well. He startled and scurried a few steps back. A suspicious look wasn't the most welcoming of expressions, but thankfully it was short-lived. "Sorry. Castellan." He relaxed and said it right this time. "I'm Reese. Kyle Reese. They do this thing where they get a student who's been here a while to give the new guys a run down of the place and answer any questions. It looks like you've got me. Where you from?"

Quinn tweaked her ponytail so it would sit exactly right, squared the nametag on her chest, and started walking around looking for somebody named Kennedy. The name could have been for a boy or a girl, but so could Quinn. She just hoped they'd be cool and popular, or (failing that) at least not annoying.

She might, on some counts, be in for a lot of disappointment there. Maybe.

The girl whose nametag, stuck deliberately askew on the left shoulder of her sleeveless shirt, read Kennedy had her thumbs hooked into her pockets and also happened to be wondering what kind of person the new little sibling (really, Constance, again?) would end up being. Maybe she was about to find out.

"Hey," she said, clearly sizing Quinn up as she approached. "So, you get stuck with me. Congratulations."

She actually did make it sound like it warranted congratulations.

"I should be congratulating you," Quinn said, lightly but with a little jut of her chin. (In truth, she figured whoever got her was lucky.) She was sizing the girl up in return; pretty, and her clothes looked expensive even if they weren't flashy. Between that and the confidence, she was likely worth getting to know.

"So how does this sibling thing work?" she asked, reasonably politely. "You impart your wisdom, I listen graciously?"

Maladicta eyed the little name tag before writing her name down. Her whole name, mind. So she had a few of them filled out with tiny, neat letters.

It was really no wonder that sticking with one name cut down on the confusion.

Now, to find this Bobby fellow. And possibly another Dunkin' Donuts.

Bobby bounced a little on his heels as he looked around for a "Maladicta". Kind of an unusual name, he thought, but then... he knew people who went by names like Magneto and Toad.

Hopefully Maladicta would be a lot more, you know, nice than those two.

As he wandered by the girl with about eleventy bajillion nametags, he thought he spotted a Maladicta in there somewhere.

"Maladicta?" he tried, squinting to read the print on the nametags.

She looked down at... the first nametag to see if he could even read it before responding. "That would be me, yes. My sibling, I presume?"

It was weird enough that Jane had to be back at yet another summer camp this summer, but there were big and little siblings? Really? Lawndale had even skipped that sort of thing, and Jane promised herself she would never tell anyone besides Daria about this, just in case she gave anyone any ideas.

And then she realized that once she was gone from that school, all graduated and at a perfectly mockable distance, then it would not only be okay, but it'd be awesome because she didn't have to deal with it.

Was she supposed to be looking for someone named Karla? She'd skipped the nametag thing and was instead standing off to the side, arms folded, trying to wish people away with the power of her mind.

Unfortunately for Jane, Karla had made something of a habit out of being very there while people were wishing her elsewhere. So, after a while of wandering around and examining everyone's name badge, she made her way over to the unfamiliar female hanging on the outskirts of the picnic.

"Kiss kiss," Karla said, giving her a wry smile. "I'm Karla. I'm assuming you're Jane by process of elimination, or someone's gotten really clever and started wearing namebadges of other people.

"I'll remember that suggestion for next time namebadges are offered," Jane said immediately. She was joking, of course. Next time her sticker would read GO AWAY or something. "So you're that big sister person."

Yeah, she was still feeling really weird on that whole front.

'Rosalind,' Katniss thought, was a beautiful name. Any name that had a hint of a flower in it immediately made her feel more at home -- Katniss was a type of white-flowering plant at home, after all. She didn't know what a person named Rosalind might look like, though, so she kept her eye on everyone, zoning in on name tags and trying to remember everything.

A blonde with neatly cropped hair, blue-green eyes, and a wearing a suit that would have fit in entirely well in an office, but rather less so at a high school welcoming picnic, was scanning the crowd.

Though she was not best pleased with having been assigned a sibling (look at her track record with her real sibling), complaining was a pointless and futile endeavour, and part of her was delighted to have been given a responsibility.

Her eyes picked out a thin girl--too thin, really, in a way that reminded Rosalind far too much of the slums--with dark hair and, upon inspection, of the other match ups, came to the only possible conclusion.

"Katniss." That wasn't a question, no. Rosalind severely doubted she was wrong.

"Yes," she answered with a quick nod, her eyes flicking over Rosalind quickly. The suit reminded her of the Capitol, or at least of regulations and formality, as did the girl's tone. Katniss immediately straightened her posture, unwilling to let this other girl make her feel sloppy or as out of place as she felt. "Hi. I assume you're Rosalind?"

So there was someone supposed to be his "big sibling" around. Cloud expected someone obviously older than him -although he was old enough to handle himself- that could answer his questions truthfully.

Well, bring it on.

Tim checked nametags until he found one that said "Cloud". Unusual name, so Tim guessed that either his or her parents were neo-hippies or Cloud wasn't from around here.

"Hey," he said. "I'm Tim. Welcome to Fandom High." Tim was almost-fifteen and small for his age, so he probably didn't look like the face of age and experience.

Disoriented, Wesley turned in a circle maybe three times before sitting down on a boulder. There were way too many people at this picnic for him to go around looking for anyone. He decided to wait and see if his big sibling, Jason Todd, would come looking for him.

Jason had been kind of glad when he saw that his sibling was a boy, because that meant he didn't have to feel awkward staring at girls to read their nametags. He wasn't sure how well he'd do, but he had a great example in Sookie, so maybe if he just thought about what she'd say if she was here, he'd do okay.

When he spotted Wesley's nametag, he gave him a friendly smile and a little wave. "Hey. How's it going? I'm Jason, I think I'm supposed to talk to you."

Claudia was looking around for her new little sibling, and trying to decide if "Prince" was a title or a first name.

While Alexander was fairly sure the nametags were a brilliant idea, he did feel a little awkward just going around and gazing at people's chest in an attempt to find a single individual one was looking for. However, he felt he might be able to narrow it down for himself a little by not only glancing at nametags, but also trying to spot out people looking for other people.

Luck just might be on his side as he addressed one of the first of such people he encountered. "Excuse me," he approached the girl, friendly and polite, "perhaps you might help me, if you're able..."
