bigdamnprincipal: (i am having a picnic)

Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The recent cold front had been a welcome weather pattern as far as Zoe was concerned, and she was very grateful for how things had turned out today - it was sunny and breezy, and just cool enough that no one would pass out from heat exhaustion. Hopefully.

Beneath the blue and gold streamers and balloons, tables had been set up with drinks and food, including an entire table of moddable different ice cream flavors. As always, there was a stack of nametags set down next two signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and one listing rooms and roommates for the new students.

[OCD is up! Have at it! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Well, the last two times Jonothon had signed up for this sibling program hadn't turned out to be total disasters, no. And so he'd gone ahead and decided to do this big sibling thing one more time.

And that was why he was here, of course, nametag fastened to his bandages as carefully as possible to keep any from tugging out of the way, keeping an eye out for somebody by the name of Madison.

It probably wasn't any real shock that Reno was here, hands in his pockets and shoulders set in their usual slouch, and he was eyeing the crowd with a smug grin on his lips.

After all... Rookies. What was not to grin about?

... He'd probably find something sooner or later, he supposed.

The Doctor ignored everyone in his path until he had a chance to collect a few things from the food table. Biscuits, mostly, and if there was anything else you wouldn't be able to notice since they were in his pockets, possibly having disappeared from this dimension for the foreseeable future.

Then it was time for people watching! Lots of little humans and big humans and some not humans or not quite or maybe human but weird milling around, gathering and chatting.

If anyone got close enough, whether they wanted a greeting or not, they were likely to get a cheery hello.

A picture would have been great. Kyle was good at identifying people by picture. Today he had to go without. He planted himself near the roommate listing, cupped his hands around his mouth and called out every few minutes. "Luke Castellan? Anyone know Luke Castellan?" Chances were he was mispronouncing the surname.

Madison was wandering around the picnic, trying to figure out what the deal was with this place. From her conversations on the shuttle, she had been thinking it was some kind of juvenile detention center but now that she was here -- it certainly didn't look like one.

She reluctantly stuck a nametag on her green t-shirt. Then she smooth down her short blue skirt and glanced at the papers in her hand again. She was looking for someone named Jonothon.

As an only child, Madison had never had to share a room before. This was definitely not something she was looking forward to. Of course, it could be worse -- they could be living in tents or something.

She looked around for Katniss.

Price didn't have a teaching buddy to meet, technically. But after having safely presided over bringing the shuttle in with the new students, he felt sticking around the picnic might be a pretty decent idea.

Plus, free snacks. Free snacks were good.

Nametags, nametags everywhere, and not a one that said- Oh, wait. There she was.

Jono nodded Madison's way when he finally spotted her, and he made his way over. Before anything else, he noticed a weird sort of tingle itching around the back of his head as he got closer, but he dismissed it as nothing and made a point to ignore it, just like that.

//Madison?//

Short and sweet, as his introductions with Fandom's newest tended to be. It seemed better to sort of ease them in to his voice, at first. He knew better than to pretend he was simply mute, by now. They were going to just hear him speak eventually anyhow.

Luke walked up behind Kyle and tapped him on the shoulder. "Castellan, actually. But you almost got it right."

Luke was used to sharing a cabin with tons of people, so this whole almost kind of having a room to himself was going to be a bit weird. Cloud was kind of a weird name, but Luke was used to it considering the names of his own family members.

The faint smell of something burning caught Madison's attention before anything else and she was looking to see if there was a campfire or something when she heard someone call her name.

It took a moment before she realized how weird her name had sounded. Almost like it was coming from inside her head. Had her ears popped on the plane? That would be weird, considering her ears were merely a projection like the rest of her body.

"Jonothon?"

//Jono, please.// He held his hand toward her, partly for a handshake, and partly so that there would be no doubt that the weird echoing voice that seemed to come from nowhere in particular was, in fact, coming from him. //That's what everybody else calls me, anyhow. Welcome to Fandom, luv.//

Now that he was close enough to touch, the burning smell was stronger. Madison shook her head, trying to clear out whatever was causing her ears to be all echo-y.

"Nice to meet you, Jono," she said, carefully shaking his hand. The bandages were kind of odd too. What the hell was going on?

Kyle didn't take being caught by surprise well. He startled and scurried a few steps back. A suspicious look wasn't the most welcoming of expressions, but thankfully it was short-lived. "Sorry. Castellan." He relaxed and said it right this time. "I'm Reese. Kyle Reese. They do this thing where they get a student who's been here a while to give the new guys a run down of the place and answer any questions. It looks like you've got me. Where you from?"

Quinn tweaked her ponytail so it would sit exactly right, squared the nametag on her chest, and started walking around looking for somebody named Kennedy. The name could have been for a boy or a girl, but so could Quinn. She just hoped they'd be cool and popular, or (failing that) at least not annoying.

"Who's Claudia?" Quinn called aloud, hoping somebody would answer.

She also hoped Claudia wouldn't be too possessive about things like closet space or the better bed.

Well, at least she wasn't freaking out, Jono mused as he re-claimed his hand. The nagging feeling in the back of his head was stronger now that he was closer to her, like an itch that he couldn't reach in order to scratch at it. He ignored it anyhow.

//Yer not going insane, by th'way.// Yes, he'd seen the shake of her head, there. //I can't speak aloud. So yer hearing what I... think at you, more or less.//

Luke kind of felt bad about scaring the poor guy and gave him an apologetic smile. He didn't realize when he was doing the whole sneaky thing sometimes.

"Nice to meet you," he said. "I, uh, guess technically I'm from Connecticut, but I've been spending the last few years at a camp in upstate New York."

He paused before adding, "It was like a summer camp. Not, like, a bad kind of camp."

As if the Dean would miss the chance to spy any new hotties before Biff got the chance - the bastard's dibs on all blondes aside. Barney was there and not in formal wear, though he was totally suited up as usual. Summer was no excuse to dress like a slob.

The smile set him at ease even more. "I've been to the bad kind of camp," Kyle shrugged. It probably wasn't the same kind of bad camp that Luke had in mind. "You weren't missing anything. This place though, it's kind of halfway between a summer camp and school. You take workshop classes and stuff. Are you a present day kid or are you dealing with some time lag too?"

For John, it was weird coming to one of these things again after eleven years away. Weirder still that he wasn't going to run around shirtless, trying to figure which new kid would be the first bit and which would refuse to accept the tales of insanity.

But this new weird couldn't stop John from smiling that he was back someplace where he'd belonged even for a little while. It helped there was food.
