Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The recent cold front had been a welcome weather pattern as far as Zoe was concerned, and she was very grateful for how things had turned out today - it was sunny and breezy, and just cool enough that no one would pass out from heat exhaustion. Hopefully.

Beneath the blue and gold streamers and balloons, tables had been set up with drinks and food, including an entire table of moddable different ice cream flavors. As always, there was a stack of nametags set down next two signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and one listing rooms and roommates for the new students.

[OCD is up! Have at it! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

The list of roommate assignments was located in a prime spot on one of the tables. Current students who had been assigned new rooms and/or roommates had been handwavily informed of the change.

As an only child, Madison had never had to share a room before. This was definitely not something she was looking forward to. Of course, it could be worse -- they could be living in tents or something.

She looked around for Katniss.

Wonderful. Katniss should have known that the girl who reminded her of the Capitol, and who may well be a spy for President Snow, would be living with her.

That was fine. She wasn't planning on doing anything to catch anyone's attention, anyway, but it was going to make certain things more difficult, at least. "It's lucky we talked earlier, huh?" she said with a forced smile. "At least you aren't a total stranger."

Yes she was. But it wouldn't do to point that out.

"Yeah, that's cool," Madison agreed. "We can figure out this place together."

Somehow she got the sense that this girl was not going to be anything like Wendy.

"Have you ever shared a room before?"

And the privilege wrapped up in that question made Katniss's smile falter a little. "My old house only had one room," she said simply. "I'm used to sharing a room."

Luke was used to sharing a cabin with tons of people, so this whole almost kind of having a room to himself was going to be a bit weird. Cloud was kind of a weird name, but Luke was used to it considering the names of his own family members.

Luke, on the other hand, sounded like a pretty normal name to Cloud. Probably.

Turning slightly to face the boy -was he really the oldest around? This was so wrong in many levels-, Cloud raised an eyebrow inquisitively. "Luke Castellan?" At least he looked as normal as a boy could look.

He wondered how long it took someone to get hair like that.

"That's me." Cloud had to wonder if everyone were going to look at his hair first.

"You knew this was a...school?" Because he had to ask.

"Who's Claudia?" Quinn called aloud, hoping somebody would answer.

She also hoped Claudia wouldn't be too possessive about things like closet space or the better bed.

"So does the universe, like, answer you when you do that at home?" asked Claudia, who was just enough in ear range to hear the question.

This, she was guessing, would be Quinn. Hey, at least it was a girl, this time.

"The universe? No," Quinn said, amiably enough. "But I figured if I said it loud enough, somebody would, and it'd be more productive than reading every nametag."

She smiled and stuck out her hand, still sizing Claudia up. Her initial impression was not competition. She wouldn't have dealt well with a roommate who was prettier than she was. "I'm Quinn. You're my roommate?"

"Claudia Donovan. And I think it goes that you're my new roommate." Look, she'd gotten here first, okay? And something about this girl seemed to bring out all the former-foster-kid snark in Claudia. Still, she'd try to be nice. "You met your big sib yet? Get the usual welcome brain explosion?"

"Aaaaand now there are roommates," Jane muttered, seeing the list and wondering how much torture she and this other girl would inflict upon each other.

Until she actually saw the name and started wondering how much torture she and this guy would inflict upon each other.

Uhura carefully pinned her nametag to her dress, then kept a look out for her new roommate, Alexander, Prince of Daventry . It was a boy again (well, she wasn't certain, but was pretty sure it was a boy), which surprisingly, she wasn't upset about. Royalty as well. Good thing she had been practicing her curtsy.

Serendipity may be smiling upon Alexander once again. He was having trouble locating his roommate, mostly because he was completely mistaken on the gender that would be afforded to the person on the list. However, not one to look down against asking for help, he approached the dark haired girl to see if she could help.

"Excuse me," he said, as politely as he could, "perhaps you could offer me some assistance..."

Uhura turned toward the voice. "Of course! How can I help? I'm still new to Fandom High, so my assistance may be limited," she said with a wry smile.

Parker had got used to having a room to herself so wasn't exactly happy she was having to share it again.

She wondered if this Wyndam-Pryce guy would turn into furniture like her last roommate had.

Back at home, Wesley had had not only his own room, but his own wing of the house. Sharing a room would be... well, different. It was on this train of thought that he stumbled directly into Parker. "Oh - terribly sorry," he blurted out. "Sorry."

"Roommates?" Alexander, who had an occasional habit of talking to himself, was intrigued by the list as he scanned it for his name. Now, this would definitely be something different! He'd never had a roommate before, and the prospect struck him as something that could be quite enjoyable.

"Now, let's see," his eyes went to the name paired with his. "Nyota Uhura. What a strange name! He must be from some exotic foreign land...!"

Maybe he'd even heard of the Land of the Green Isles! Now that he had a name, Alexander looked around, trying to find this fellow who might be his new roommate, never once thinking that the name could belong to one of the females currently around the table.
