Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The recent cold front had been a welcome weather pattern as far as Zoe was concerned, and she was very grateful for how things had turned out today - it was sunny and breezy, and just cool enough that no one would pass out from heat exhaustion. Hopefully.

Beneath the blue and gold streamers and balloons, tables had been set up with drinks and food, including an entire table of ~~moddable~~ different ice cream flavors. As always, there was a stack of nametags set down next two signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and one listing rooms and roommates for the new students.

[OCD is up! Have at it! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"So does the universe, like, answer you when you do that at home?" asked Claudia, who was just enough in ear range to hear the question.

This, she was guessing, would be Quinn. Hey, at least it was a girl, this time.

"The universe? No," Quinn said, amiably enough. "But I figured if I said it loud enough, somebody would, and it'd be more productive than reading every nametag."

She smiled and stuck out her hand, still sizing Claudia up. Her initial impression was not competition. She wouldn't have dealt well with a roommate who was prettier than she was. "I'm Quinn. You're my roommate?"

"Claudia Donovan. And I think it goes that you're my new roommate." Look, she'd gotten here first, okay? And something about this girl seemed to bring out all the former-foster-kid snark in Claudia. Still, she'd try to be nice. "You met your big sib yet? Get the usual welcome brain explosion?"

"... whatever," Quinn said. She understood the distinction between Claudia being her roommate vs. her being Claudia's, and in another mood she might have even argued it, but it was not the more important thing on the table, here. Especially if she was going to sleep 10 feet from this girl for months.

"And no, I ~~haven't played through the thread~~ haven't found Kennedy yet," she added. "Do you know her? And why would my brain explode?"

"Kennedy. Hard core." Claudia had never actually spoken to Kennedy, but the girl went up against Faith in the self defense class. That was, like, the definition of hard core in Claudia's book. "Let's just say the island is . . . a little bit out of the ordinary. I'll let her do the real honors."

"Yeah, everyone on the bus here was weird," Quinn said. "The first girl I talked to didn't know where Ohio was. Or Italy."

She looked like she had a million more questions, but she'd save them for Kennedy. "So what should I know about being your roommate?" she asked, putting the tiniest stress on the "your" to show she wasn't taking it too seriously.

"That happens more often than you might think." Claudia shrugged. "I'm a pretty easy roommate. Do you mind the smell of solder? 'Cause I can start doing my experiments on the roof."

"I don't usually hang around sniffing solder," Quinn said. "But I probably won't have a problem. You're like a scientist?"

She actually thought that was pretty cool; she liked the idea of having a roommate who was really good at something, and it wasn't like Quinn was going to go nuts and take up welding as a hobby herself.

"Just like one. I'm primarily a physicist, but I dabble in chemistry and electrical engineering." She tilted her head. "You?"

Oh, there was no way not to sound like the bimbo next to that, so Quinn decided to just embrace it. There was nothing wrong with not being some supergenius.

"I'm head cheerleader," she answered. (Technically, she supposed, it was past tense, but she couldn't say it that way quite yet.) "And I do a lot with my church groups."

Claudia was wondering if the school officials went for opposites on purpose. "I'm not really good with sports or church stuff, but I know we've got cheerleaders around, and there's Our Lady of Fandom on the island. I've only been once, but the guy who runs it seems to be pretty cool."

"Is the cheer squad any good?" Quinn asked, craning her neck to see if she could spot any uniforms. "My team at home won nationals last year."

She simply filed the church information under things it was good to know. "Our Lady" sounded Catholic, and Quinn really wasn't, but ... church was church, right?

Claudia would say so, but then, Claudia wasn't really into that sort of stuff. "Dunno. I . . . really don't follow sports." She shrugged a little sheepishly. "I took a self defense class last session? I'm probably lucky I didn't break anything."

"I'm supposed to take gym this term," Quinn said, by way of conversation. "I'll figure it out."

Changing the topic, she added, "So do you have a boyfriend or anything that I should know about?"

Who knew -- maybe Fandom guys liked soldering geeks.

"Why would you need to know about a -- oh." That maybe answered her question right there. "I'm tight with a couple of guys. But nothing serious. But yeah, if a giant shirtless guy shows up? That's just Jacob. He likes to ask when I'm gonna blow stuff up."

"I like to know if I can expect to get sexiled," Quinn explained. (She'd made a vow, but she didn't think everyone else had.) "Jacob sounds cool. My boyfriend's named Finn, but he's back home."

"Oh, Jacob's not my -- I mean, he's a great guy, very sweet, but he's more of just, like, a guy friend. Must be tough leaving your boyfriend back home, though."

"It is," Quinn said simply. "But I figure it'll just make him want me more."

"Yeah, but won't you want him more, too?"

"It's a boy-girl thing," Quinn explained, patronizing. "I can withstand temptation much easier than he can."

She refused to admit she had desires. Celibacy club had brainwashed her that way. (Also, she was lying.)

"I'm actually pretty sure there's no biological basis for that. But sure."

"So glad we're in agreement," Quinn said. (Biology, shmiology.) "Anything else I should know, or should I just bring my stuff up and take a bed?"

"Well, the made bed is mine. I don't have any pets or anything, so you don't have to worry about that, and there usually aren't any gremlins lurking around, so you're probably good."

Quinn nodded. That all sounded pretty standard (and she was relieved to hear she wouldn't have to deal with somebody else's pet). "Then I'll see you up there."

"Guess so. Enjoy the picnic."
