Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The recent cold front had been a welcome weather pattern as far as Zoe was concerned, and she was very grateful for how things had turned out today - it was sunny and breezy, and just cool enough that no one would pass out from heat exhaustion. Hopefully.

Beneath the blue and gold streamers and balloons, tables had been set up with drinks and food, including an entire table of moddable different ice cream flavors. As always, there was a stack of nametags set down next two signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and one listing rooms and roommates for the new students.

[OCD is up! Have at it! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

As an only child, Madison had never had to share a room before. This was definitely not something she was looking forward to. Of course, it could be worse -- they could be living in tents or something.

She looked around for Katniss.

Wonderful. Katniss should have known that the girl who reminded her of the Capitol, and who may well be a spy for President Snow, would be living with her.

That was fine. She wasn't planning on doing anything to catch anyone's attention, anyway, but it was going to make certain things more difficult, at least. "It's lucky we talked earlier, huh?" she said with a forced smile. "At least you aren't a total stranger."

Yes she was. But it wouldn't do to point that out.

"Yeah, that's cool," Madison agreed. "We can figure out this place together."

Somehow she got the sense that this girl was not going to be anything like Wendy.

"Have you ever shared a room before?"

And the privilege wrapped up in that question made Katniss's smile falter a little. "My old house only had one room," she said simply. "I'm used to sharing a room."

Madison immediately felt guilty for the question. She couldn't even begin to imagine what it would be like to live in a one room house. "I'm pretty neat," she said. "So you don't have to worry about me messing the room up."

"Me too," Katniss said, shrugging. It was on the tip of her tongue to say she didn't have much to begin with, and then she remembered Cinna. Hopefully he wouldn't send anything too odd for a few weeks, at least. "I tend to keep regular hours," she added, instead. "And I can sleep through nearly anything."

Madison nodded. "I don't sleep much but I'll try to be quiet when you're sleeping."

She wasn't going to mention the not eating much thing for the moment, given how thin her new roommate appeared to be.

"You don't need to worry," she promised her, making sure to smile again. She needed to be friendly. "I've slept soundly in trees. I'm sure you'll be nothing in comparison."

"How do you sleep in a tree?" Madison found herself asking. She couldn't begin to imagine it being comfortable.

"Find forked branches and strap yourself in with rope," she replied easily. "I'm pretty good at climbing."

"I haven't climbed a tree in years," she said. "Of course, the trees in Florida weren't really the kind you could climb."

Madison was wondering if it would be a useful skill to have. Probably not, since the reapers had wings. But maybe.

"No?" Katniss was confused. What kind of trees couldn't be climbed? "Too small?"

"Yeah, they're really skinny and have really thin branches," Madison said. "Have you ever seen a palm tree?"
