Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The recent cold front had been a welcome weather pattern as far as Zoe was concerned, and she was very grateful for how things had turned out today - it was sunny and breezy, and just cool enough that no one would pass out from heat exhaustion. Hopefully.

Beneath the blue and gold streamers and balloons, tables had been set up with drinks and food, including an entire table of moddable different ice cream flavors. As always, there was a stack of nametags set down next two signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and one listing rooms and roommates for the new students.

[OCD is up! Have at it! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Well," Alexander explained, "I seem to be having trouble locating my new roommate. You wouldn't happen to know a gentleman by the name of Nyota Uhura?"

No, it didn't occur to Alexander to glance at the young lady's name tag. In all honesty, he felt terribly improper were he to look.

Uhura pointed to her name tag, still smiling. "You've found Nyota Uhura. Just Uhura, actually. And while I'm female, I'm sure there's an alternate universe somewhere in which I am male." She held out her hand.

"You--"

Allow Alexander's brain a moment to catch up with all of that, and then, once it did catch up, manage to wrangle with the idea of a girl for a roommate. An attractive girl, at that. He flushed, just slightly, and now would feel even more improper for looking at the nametag.

"My sincerest apologies, Uhura!" he rushed in quickly, taking the offered hand not to shake it, but to kiss the back of it as a gentleman should. "I thought it only logical that I would be rooming with one of similar gender, but I see that that assumption was very wrong. And it's a very strange name to me; I've never heard the likes of it before! From where do you hail, if I may ask?"

"Oh!" Uhura was surprised by the hand kissing. It was a custom she hadn't seen before in person. She recovered, and dropped a quick curtsy. "No apology necessary. I, too, thought that I would room with someone of the same gender when I got here. It's a bit of a shock, I know. But you get used to it, maybe even like it."

"I originally 'hail' from Nairobi. And you? Where are you from? What would like to be called?" She hoped that he wouldn't insist on protocol and curtsying all the time. No other royalty she'd met so far did.

Well, Alexander had only known he was royalty for a short time...which is why he may have seemed a bit flustered beneath it all. "Just...Alexander," he said, seeming as if being able to tell her that lifted a great weight off his shoulders. "And I am from a land called Daventry; have you heard of it? I am unfamiliar with Nairobi, but the place sounds as exotic as your name."

"Okay, 'Just Alexander,'" Uhura said teasingly. "Nairobi is really just like any other city, with the exception that it's in Kenya, in Africa. I haven't heard of Daventry. Where is it? Is it on Earth, or another planet?" Uhura figured she would save the question of same dimension or timeline for later.

"Err..." Alexander really had no idea how to handle that. Geography seemed, for the most part, optional where he was from. "Well, I know it's...not anywhere remotely near here, if that's any help. It's a nice place, though, and I've been to a few other lands, but none with names such as those you've mentioned. But," and here, he really couldn't help himself, a clear hopefulness to his voice as he ventured into this next question, "while we're on the subject of strange lands, you wouldn't happen to be familiar with the Land of the Green Isles, would you?"

Uhura pondered. Land of the Green Isles could refer to the present British Isles. Or any number of different islands on any number of different planets. While she was good with languages, geography was not her strong suit.

"Could be Britain?" she said with some hesitation. He sounded so hopeful she didn't want to let him down.

"Britain," Alexander repeated it carefully, thoughtfully, as if committing the word to memory and from here on in vowing to adore it if it, indeed, was another unheard name for Cassima's home. "I have not heard of that either, but perhaps I will look into it. If it is indeed another name for the Land of the Green Isles, then perhaps that is why no one has heard of it before."

Thought that didn't explain why Cassima hadn't told him that name instead.

"Thank you, Uhura. I cannot express to you how much I will be in gratitude to you if indeed you are correct."

"Glad I could help, Just Alexander," Uhura said. She liked him. She thought he would be a fun roommate.

Alexander was about to open his mouth to explain that she didn't need the just part when he realized Uhura was only teasing him, and stopped himself after getting just far enough to be embarrassed about it. It was the sort of joke he could imagine Rosella making, and he narrowed his eyes in return, lifting up a finger because he'd caught that. "You're just lucky," he teased back, "that just can also mean kind and fair so I'll take that a compliment, Uhura."

Uhura feigned being insulted. "Of course you should take it as a compliment. I would never have assumed calling you diminutive."

"I should hope not." Alexander nodded, trying to sound terribly somber and grave, though he wasn't doing a particularly good job of it.

Chuckling tended to spoil the effect.

Uhura tried to keep a straight face, but failed. She started giggling. "Oh, Alexander, you are going to be a fun roommate."

"Thank you!" Really, that was one of the most encouraging things Alexander had heard thus far. "I truly hope so, Uhura. I've never had a roommate before, so it should be quite the adventure."
