Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The recent cold front had been a welcome weather pattern as far as Zoe was concerned, and she was very grateful for how things had turned out today - it was sunny and breezy, and just cool enough that no one would pass out from heat exhaustion. Hopefully.

Beneath the blue and gold streamers and balloons, tables had been set up with drinks and food, including an entire table of moddable different ice cream flavors. As always, there was a stack of nametags set down next two signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and one listing rooms and roommates for the new students.

[OCD is up! Have at it! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

The faint smell of something burning caught Madison's attention before anything else and she was looking to see if there was a campfire or something when she heard someone call her name.

It took a moment before she realized how weird her name had sounded. Almost like it was coming from inside her head. Had her ears popped on the plane? That would be weird, considering her ears were merely a projection like the rest of her body.

"Jonothon?"

//Jono, please.// He held his hand toward her, partly for a handshake, and partly so that there would be no doubt that the weird echoing voice that seemed to come from nowhere in particular was, in fact, coming from him. //That's what everybody else calls me, anyhow. Welcome to Fandom, luv.//

Now that he was close enough to touch, the burning smell was stronger. Madison shook her head, trying to clear out whatever was causing her ears to be all echo-y.

"Nice to meet you, Jono," she said, carefully shaking his hand. The bandages were kind of odd too. What the hell was going on?
furnaceface: (Told you so)

Well, at least she wasn't freaking out, Jono mused as he re-claimed his hand. The nagging feeling in the back of his head was stronger now that he was closer to her, like an itch that he couldn't reach in order to scratch at it. He ignored it anyhow.

//Yer not going insane, by th'way.// Yes, he'd seen the shake of her head, there. //I can't speak aloud. So yer hearing what I... think at you, more or less.//

Madison's fingers instinctively sought her amulet and she stroked the smooth surface. What had Ron said about being wary of psychics? She hadn't really given it much thought.

"So you're reading my mind?"

Jono sighed, or at least projected something that felt as though it was intended to be a sigh, his eyes falling toward the ground and one hand lifting to toy awkwardly at the bandages around the back of his neck.

//Not at all,// he replied. //I wouldn't. I can't, at any rate.//

Yes he could. He just absolutely refused to believe it, unless it was completely necessary.

//Just talking. This is my voice, luv, and nothing more.//

"That's really weird," Madison blurted out without stopping to think about the words. She immediately looked sheepish. "Sorry. It's just... you know. Not something I've ever run into."
furnaceface: (Very disappointed in you)

Jono gave her a good-natured eyeroll in reply, crossing his arms over his chest.

//Trust me, this is hardly anything compared to some of th'things you'll run into, around here.//

Jono's voice was totally not a big deal. His face was a different story. And the island itself?

//You'll see soon enough, I suppose. Where are you from, gel?//

"What do you mean?" Madison asked warily. "What other kind of stuff am I going to run into?"

She was worried about dark reapers and black wings.

"Uh, most recently from Pennsylvania but I mostly grew up in Florida."
furnaceface: (Eyeroll)

//This is not Florida,// Jono assured her, bemused. //Really, I almost need to just draft up an essay to hand to my little sibling assignments on their first day. You'll get sick of people warning you about gremlins and invasions in no time, trust me.//

"Gremlins? Invasions?"

Madison had no idea what to make of any of this.
furnaceface: (Very disappointed in you)

//Don't accuse me of making this up,// Jono cautioned, raising an eyebrow. //I'm standin' here talkin' into yer head, yer hardly in any position to think that I'm full of gobshite as soon as I mention something else that's strange.//

Jono was kind of preachy sometimes. Ignore that, Madison.

"I was kind of hoping for more details," Madison explained. "I mean, yeah, I believe you that this place is strange."

Which made Ron's decision to send her here make a lot more sense.
furnaceface: (Casual conversation)

Jono gave her a critical eye at that for a moment, and then he relented and shrugged.

//Fine. I could go on about what's odd around here for days, really, and still never touch on everything at all. There are the gremlins, like I said. They have hallucinogenic venom and it's best not to be bitten by them. And there's the occasional invasion, from whatever random thing decides it wants to overrun the island on any given day of th'week. Once, it was vegetables.//

Just to give her an idea about what to expect, and all.

Madison wasn't too concerned about the gremlin thing. After all, she didn't have a real body. But random things overrunning the island?

"... how do vegetables attack?" she had to ask.
furnaceface: (Facepalm)

//They roll about and try to bludgeon people to death,// Jono sighed. //That was, admittedly, one of th'stranger invasions I've been here for.//

[identity profile] onlykindofdead.livejournal.com 2010-07-03 04:13 pm (UTC)(link)
"That is definitely weirder than having you talk in my head," Madison decided.

[personal profile] furnaceface 2010-07-03 04:15 pm (UTC)(link)
//Well, look at that,// Jono replied, hands on his hips. //I've been out-weirded already, and we've only known one another for five minutes. I think that's a record of some sort.//

//Classmates who aren't at all what you were expecting, people with powers, students serving in the military, a small talking frog, that sort of thing.// Jono shrugged. //And then there are th'days you'll want to stay in bed. You'll find you've woken up th'wrong gender, or made of plastic, or you'll be four years old again, or a mother. This place is full of first-thing-in-th'morning surprises.//

Madison's eyes went wide at a few of those things. Okay, pretty much all of them.

"What kind of powers do you mean?" she asked, focusing on the thing that jumped out at her the most.
furnaceface: (Casual conversation)

Jono shrugged a little, dismissively. Really.

//Pick something, luv. There are people who can fly, people who can cast spells and light fires and healers and telepaths... I'm certain there are more that I haven't met yet, for that matter. Cor, there's even a group that meets on Wednesdays, just to organize efforts to keep the island safe if you've got powers.//

[Sorry for that lull! LJ ate the notif, and then there were links to grab.]

"Huh. Interesting."

Madison wondered if some of those people could help her figure out how to use the reaper powers she allegedly had.
