Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The recent cold front had been a welcome weather pattern as far as Zoe was concerned, and she was very grateful for how things had turned out today - it was sunny and breezy, and just cool enough that no one would pass out from heat exhaustion. Hopefully.

Beneath the blue and gold streamers and balloons, tables had been set up with drinks and food, including an entire table of moddable different ice cream flavors. As always, there was a stack of nametags set down next two signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and one listing rooms and roommates for the new students.

[OCD is up! Have at it! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

It probably wasn't any real shock that Reno was here, hands in his pockets and shoulders set in their usual slouch, and he was eyeing the crowd with a smug grin on his lips.

After all... Rookies. What was not to grin about?

... He'd probably find something sooner or later, he supposed.

So, see, the thing was that Ino wasn't sure she was really up to attending the picnic, but it felt weird to not be, and so after making sure that Zack knew where she was going Ino had headed down with the intentions of looking around for a bit.

But first things first, she had to make sure that Reno was--still there. More for her own piece of mind than anything else, it had to be admitted, but still.

Which meant that there was a particular wee blonde Rookie, wandering over to him with a carefully arranged smile on her face. She could lie. She was going to spend the whole time here lying.

And then she was going to go back and hide her face against Zack's chest when she got tired of lying. It sounded like a good plan to her.

Awww. There was his Rookie, being such a brave little toaster for the new kids. Reno offered her an easy grin that hid an edge of worry behind it as she approached.

"Yo, Rookie! Good to see you out and about."

She lifted her shoulders in a shrug.

"It's a picnic," Ino pointed out. "It would've been out of the norm for me to not attend."

"Yeah, and if you do somethin' like sit this one out, people will get all ... worried," Reno noted. It made sense to him. He'd forced himself to go to social events in the past even though he was feeling like shit underneath it all, just to keep up appearances. "Meet any interesting newbies out there, yet?"

"You're my first stop of the day," she said, and Ino was going to pretend that was just how it had happened to fall out. "And, yeah. Better to hang around, might even be good for me."

Sure, and she believed the sky was purple too.

Well, it kind of could be in Edge, on really hazy days when the sun was going down. Did that count?

"Get some of the new kids to pull off their shirts. Draw little bullseyes on their backs when they ain't lookin'?"

"I'd rather just admire them shirtless," she said lightly. "And then go and find Zack and tell him about it 'till he sulks at me."

And then Ino could get Zack to go shirtless and that was a shiny spot of happiness right there.

In a surprisingly progressive move for Reno, his lip didn't even curl at Ino's mention of Zack, now! Apparently, he was getting used to this nightmare relationship that those two were in.

Or something.

"Gods, not the puppy face," Reno sighed, rolling his eyes good-naturedly. "He practise that in a mirror?"

"No," she said, wrinkling her nose at him. "It's natural skill. I'm getting better at ignoring it."

... By not looking at him when he pulled it.

"You master that, you'll have managed to do somethin' Tseng ain't never been able to do," Reno snorted. "I'll be impressed, Rookie."

"I'd guess it's more adapting through over-exposure," she said, adopting a thoughtful look. "I deal with Zack daily, Tseng doesn't."

"Mmm, and Tseng ain't never had to share a room with him for any length of time," Reno mused, looking pointedly at the new roommate listing. "Damn, you'll be immune in no time, at this rate."

She flushed slightly.

"We just made it formal," Ino said, shrugging. "He'd been stayin' there since--before Angeal mostly, and after... he ain't really left at all."

Reno nodded, soaking that in. If it was any other guy, he probably would have tossed in some sort of joking, 'he pushes his luck and I'll kick his ass for you,' for good measure. But... Not so much, with Zack. For various reasons.

"So long as you're comfortable with it," he said, instead.

Reno's wry grin. He'd show you it.

"I think you're a ninja and one of my Rookies, but you're still a teenage girl who knows a pretty smile when she sees it," Reno replied. "But you ain't stupid, I know that, too. So I'm gonna have to trust you on this, huh?"

"That ain't gonna stop me," Reno pointed out. "You're my Rookie, Rookie. I fuss."

Even if certain other Rookies would never believe as much. Which drove him nuts. But, hey, that was also the job of the Rookie.

"He smells funny," Reno retorted, "and he's got stupid hair."

Yes. That was seriously the best that he could come up with to hold against Zack. And the smelling funny thing wasn't even entirely true, generally. But Reno had only really ever had the honor of smelling Zack after the boy had been through hell and back and was drowning in post-battle sweat, so maybe he wasn't lying, either?

"And that's why you don't like him?" Ino asked, making a face at him. "And he doesn't smell weird at all. Or have stupid hair."

She was used to the hair.

"Why're you so against him?"

"He's SOLDIER, I'm a Turk," Reno replied, shrugging and smirking a bit at the question. "You ask him sometime, what it is he thinks our job is. See what SOLDIERs think our purpose really is, yo. SOLDIER is there to look pretty while they smash crap, Rookie. Bein' a Turk takes finesse."

Okay... so that wasn't the reason why Reno was against him, by a long shot. But it was a nice, convenient starting point, at least. And not entirely untrue.

"He thinks you're not the best," she said, crossing her arms. "'Cause you waved your glorified stick in his face on first meeting. He's not fully sold on you bein' important to me either."

"Yeah, well, he thought he was bein' the hero, runnin' headfirst into Turk business," Reno replied, shrugging dismissively. "Cissnei had her situation handled fine, didn't need no SOLDIER boy to leap in to save the day, yo."

Damn, that had been ages ago. It felt like forever, to Reno.
