Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The recent cold front had been a welcome weather pattern as far as Zoe was concerned, and she was very grateful for how things had turned out today - it was sunny and breezy, and just cool enough that no one would pass out from heat exhaustion. Hopefully.

Beneath the blue and gold streamers and balloons, tables had been set up with drinks and food, including an entire table of moddable different ice cream flavors. As always, there was a stack of nametags set down next two signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and one listing rooms and roommates for the new students.

[OCD is up! Have at it! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Kyle didn't take being caught by surprise well. He startled and scurried a few steps back. A suspicious look wasn't the most welcoming of expressions, but thankfully it was short-lived. "Sorry. Castellan." He relaxed and said it right this time. "I'm Reese. Kyle Reese. They do this thing where they get a student who's been here a while to give the new guys a run down of the place and answer any questions. It looks like you've got me. Where you from?"

Luke kind of felt bad about scaring the poor guy and gave him an apologetic smile. He didn't realize when he was doing the whole sneaky thing sometimes.

"Nice to meet you," he said. "I, uh, guess technically I'm from Connecticut, but I've been spending the last few years at a camp in upstate New York."

He paused before adding, "It was like a summer camp. Not, like, a bad kind of camp."

The smile set him at ease even more. "I've been to the bad kind of camp," Kyle shrugged. It probably wasn't the same kind of bad camp that Luke had in mind. "You weren't missing anything. This place though, it's kind of halfway between a summer camp and school. You take workshop classes and stuff. Are you a present day kid or are you dealing with some time lag too?"

Luke raised an eyebrow. "What year is it supposed to be here?"

"2010," Kyle replied. "I'm from 2019...or it might by 2020 now." Even his own timeline was confusing. "Which isn't the same 2020 that most of the people here will have." He looked through the crowd and spotted the dragon and the boy with him. "And the Viking-looking guy over there is Hiccup. He's an actual Viking from whenever it is Vikings come from. There won't be a test on this."

"I, uh--" Luke turned to look over at Hiccup and turned back just as fast when he saw the dragon. They had made him uncomfortable ever since the Hesperides incident. "--I'm from the past. A little. 2003."

Okay, so, time travel was a bit weird, but it wasn't anything he couldn't handle. Kyle seemed to be handling it just fine.

"You've got it easy," Kyle said, trying to sound reassuring. "My little sibling from last term is from about a hundred years ago. She had some catching up to do. You've at least got the tech figured out. You doing okay so far?"

"Uh so far, yeah," he said with a nod. "I'm not exactly the poster child for normalcy so I think I'm going to be able to take things like time travel in stride."

"Perfect. You'll fit in okay. Everyone does. It's weird that everyone does, but weird's normal, so...I don't know where that was going. If you're good with the non-normal stuff, I'll skip to the important stuff. Cafeteria food's edible, but..." Kyle looked uncertain. "It's not your top choice, let's leave it at that. If you check all the floors, there's usually someone cooking and they'll always share. Common rooms are stocked, help yourself, and there's all kinds of food in town too. What's your money situation like?" Kyle missed the lesson growing up where there were some topics that weren't for polite conversation.

Luke was surrounded by people who lacked filters thanks to their ADHD, so blunt questions were something he was used to. "I've got enough. And if I run out, I know how I can get some more."

That's where the whole stealing thing came into play.

"Good," Kyle nodded. "If you run into trouble, come find me. I'll help you out. The guy who had me on my first day did the same for me. Room 511, up a few floors from you," he said, pointing to the roommate list. "Got any questions?"

"511, got it," Luke said. That would be easy enough to read on a door, even with his whole dyslexia thing. "I don't think I've got any questions so far, but I appreciate you helping me out."

It sort of reminded him of how he gave newbies the run down at Camp Half-Blood.

"It's no problem," Kyle assured him. "Good luck with the roommate. I'll see you around."
