Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The recent cold front had been a welcome weather pattern as far as Zoe was concerned, and she was very grateful for how things had turned out today - it was sunny and breezy, and just cool enough that no one would pass out from heat exhaustion. Hopefully.

Beneath the blue and gold streamers and balloons, tables had been set up with drinks and food, including an entire table of moddable different ice cream flavors. As always, there was a stack of nametags set down next two signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and one listing rooms and roommates for the new students.

[OCD is up! Have at it! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

It should be noted that Rosalind was hardly trying to make Katniss feel out of place. That certainly wasn't going to change the way Rosalind appraised the girl and the sudden change in posture.

"Yes," she said, something that was almost amused flickering through her eyes for a moment before disappearing and leaving her cool and aloof in appearance. "I've been assigned to be your 'sibling'," Rosalind continued, "which is Fandom Island short-hand for being the person meant to help you adjust here."

She didn't need to -- Katniss already felt out of place. (Though, really, this was all Katniss's own problem.)

"They don't think I can adjust on my own?" she asked, actually quirking a little smile.

"Depending on what your home is like," she said seriously. "The odds are unlikely of an easy adjustment."

"Why?" she asked, taking Rosalind seriously. "Why is this place...difficult?" It had already been proven that Madison, at least, was pretending she'd never heard of Panem. So there was that problem, to start.

"One question first," she said briskly. "What do you recall of your travelling here?"

Katniss was a little confused. But she obediently replied, "I took a train from District 12 to the Capitol, then a hovercraft. And then the portal, which I'd never done before."

All right. Good.

"That portal," she said, keeping her voice crisp and almost painfully professional in an attempt to not sound insane. "Is a gateway to another world. Upon passing through that portal, you left your world behind. Fandom Island is a place that rests on an intersection of multiple universes. Most people here are from worlds you have never heard of and they will not be aware of your world."

And Katniss was just going to stare at her, because crisp or not, that sounded insane. But at the same time, it explained why no one seemed to know where she was from. No one seemed to know about Panem, or District 12 -- certainly no one had recognized her. And that explained how she didn't know where Florida was, or Pennsylvania, or --

"How does it work?" she asked eagerly, dropping her voice a bit. "I'm in another world? Really?"

"I assure you," she said, "that what I've said is true. This world is known as Earth, the year is 2010 and it is currently July 3rd. The library has a good selection of materials about the intersection of universes and how they connect. I suggest, should you wish for full understanding, that you read up on it."

That was useful, Rosalind.

"In short, consider the universes as separate streams. Some of them diverge only a small amount and so there as similarities between the worlds--one world might be ten years behind another, but the same in all other respects. Other worlds diverged a great deal more leading to completely different worlds with no connection to the one we're standing one, whether it is in name, time, or geography."

Katniss made a mental note to check the library, though that had never really been her strong suit. "2010. I've gone back in time," she said in disbelief. "I see. I...didn't know any of this was possible."

"It's quite normal," Rosalind said, a bit awkwardly. "Are you from far in the future?"

"Yes," she said, shrugging. This made sense, considering what Madison had said. "But I'm not surprised, I guess? That this is...normal. It's possible I just never heard about it."

Rosalind's eyebrows arched.

"It's unlikely that it's normal for your time," Rosalind said. "Or what is known, is not the full story."

"I keep learning that things are possible in my time," she admitted. "And I've just...never seen them. So. Could be. But I'm willing to accept that it's not normal. I do wonder if they knew where they were sending me." She smiled a bit falsely, conscious of the fact that she might be under scrutiny, and added, "I mean, of course they did, but this place is...different from what I thought."
