Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The recent cold front had been a welcome weather pattern as far as Zoe was concerned, and she was very grateful for how things had turned out today - it was sunny and breezy, and just cool enough that no one would pass out from heat exhaustion. Hopefully.

Beneath the blue and gold streamers and balloons, tables had been set up with drinks and food, including an entire table of moddable different ice cream flavors. As always, there was a stack of nametags set down next two signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and one listing rooms and roommates for the new students.

[OCD is up! Have at it! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"I am," Karla said. "Here to explain all the crazy that is Fandom to you. Just to get it out of the way, the reason we have this system in place is because this island is very weird and has a mercurial sense of humor. I'm going to tell you a lot of stuff, you're going to scoff and think I am hazing you, and that's how matters will stand for a few days. But once you start realizing I'm telling you the truth, feel free to come to me with any questions or concerns because it's probably something we've already dealt with."

She gave Jane a sympathetic smile. "You about ready for this?"

"Nope!" Karla was confident in saying that, as she had yet to actually figure out what that was.

"But enough tiptoeing around everything." A basket overflowing with goodies appeared out of nowehere and into Karla's hands. "Let's talk specifics. First of all, I'm not sure when and where you're from, but it's 2010 here." There was a calendar in the basket and everything!

Jane looked at her, only slightly startled. If she wasn't thinking that was just some kind of magic trick, the kind magicians did and televised because they thought it made them cool, she'd probably be kind of freaked out.

As it was, she started obviously looking around for something specific. Namely, a candid camera.

Karla didn't really pay that much mind, being used to a similar reaction. "So, I'm not sure if you have your own cell phone," she continued, "so I picked you up one of those pay as you go ones from Turtle and Canary, the local general store. And there's a gift certificate in there, too. They have all sorts of things there that you will need, whether you come from a different year, or a whole different world, as I do."

She paused. "You'll have to get used to that," she added. "Lots of people are."
