Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The recent cold front had been a welcome weather pattern as far as Zoe was concerned, and she was very grateful for how things had turned out today - it was sunny and breezy, and just cool enough that no one would pass out from heat exhaustion. Hopefully.

Beneath the blue and gold streamers and balloons, tables had been set up with drinks and food, including an entire table of ~~moddable~~ different ice cream flavors. As always, there was a stack of nametags set down next two signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and one listing rooms and roommates for the new students.

[OCD is up! Have at it! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

While Alexander was fairly sure the nametags were a brilliant idea, he did feel a little awkward just going around and gazing at people's chest in an attempt to find a single individual one was looking for. However, he felt he might be able to narrow it down for himself a little by not only glancing at nametags, but also trying to spot out people looking for other people.

Luck just might be on his side as he addressed one of the first of such people he encountered. "Excuse me," he approached the girl, friendly and polite, "perhaps you might help me, if you're able..."

Claudia looked up from her own search, eyebrows raising as she got a good look at him.

Definitely a title.

"'swhat I'm here for," she assured him. "Especially if you're Prince Alexander."

Alexander was quite taken aback with his fortune, if indeed his next question wound up being answered in the positive. "I am indeed Prince Alexander," he said, with quite a bit of pride that he couldn't exactly help. "You wouldn't happen to be Miss Claudia Donovan, then, would you?"

"I am, though that's pretty much the first time anyone's called me 'Miss'. How's it going so far?"

Alexander couldn't help but wonder if the comment was meant that he was correct in the title or not, but resolved not to get stuck on worrying about it. "So far," he said, smiling easily, "so good. It was a very...interesting journey on the shuttle, and the other students I have met so far are very friendly. I am...quite shocked, however, at how many students there actually are. I've never seen a population so large before!"

Claudia blinked. ". . . Really? Your country must be really small, huh?"

Despite himself, Alexander grinned, ducking his head a little sheepishly. "It's very...quaint. Now, the place I grew up, that was small..."

Of course, he was also restricted to a tower for the majority of it, but that was beside the point.

"Really. And when are you from?" It seemed a reasonable question, even beyond the "let's cover the basics of Fandom" thing.

"Err, when?" asked Alexander, not sure if he heard that right. Maybe she'd asked a different word, but she had a strange accent so it just sounded like when.

"Yeah, I know. But at the very least a general developmental era would be helpful, if not the exact date."

"Well," said Alexander, thoughtfully, and went into a small schpiel about the general estimation of seasons and moons and harvests that had passed since the notable event of his father taking the throne would be, giving numbers that were clearly not in any relation to a Gregorian calendar that might seem more familiar to Claudia.

"Does that help?" he asked, having a feeling in his gut that it wouldn't.

Well, it pretty thoroughly placed him in "not from anything remotely resembling this universe", which was helpful. "Ah. Well, it's summer, 2010 here. July. Possibly none of which actually means anything to you."

"I know summer!" offered Alexander with a satisfied smile. "And a beautiful summer it seems so far. I'm glad to discover that the island is as beautiful as I hoped it would be. Is it always this nice?"

"When we're not getting attacked by monsters or turned into plastic, sure. So are you an actual prince?"

"Er, yes."

Usually, when someone asked that question, Alexander would swell with a sort of sheepish pride, but what Claudia had said preceding sort of arrested his attention more.

"Are we attacked by monsters often here?" he asked, his voice a mix between shock and excitement.

"Once a semester or so, from what I've heard. Keeps ya on your toes."

"Yes," said Alexander, frowning a little, "life seems to do that. What kind of monsters?"

"Well, there's been monkeyponies and gremlins since I got here last winter. We actually have gremlins all the time? But these were extra vicious."

"Vigilance," said Alexander, with a determined nod, "should be key, then."

He added, after a moment, "I think my mother may have missed that part in the brochure..."

He couldn't imagine Valanice allowing sending her only son back into danger. Though the could imagine Graham doing it. Maybe he hid that part from her.

"Yeah, I'm pretty sure my social worker missed that bit, too. But for the most part, it's just goofy ass stuff like singing flowers. Almost like someone's experimenting on the universe."

"Singing flowers I can handle," said Alexander. "If they sing well..."

"I'm not much of a music critic. I couldn't really say."
