Library [25/01]

Karal was late, and he bolted into the library from the stable, robes flying and dusty. He skittered to a stop behind the counter, got everything ready, then opened the library.

That done, he settled behind the counter and started checking in books. Why yes, he was trying to pretend he'd been completely on time.

There seemed to be a mess under the counter, so Karal was kneeling on the floor, trying to get everything tidy.

He might not be visible to anyone coming into the library, but he was there.

It was the second time in a week Jaina was in the library, and one day maybe she'd actually look at the books or something. Not seeing him at first but aware of his presence, she greeted the air with, "I know you're here..."

Karal straightened up enough to see over the top of the counter. "Jaina!" He got to his feet and beamed at her. "I am here, see?"

"Clearly," she grinned. "I haven't seen you in a while, so I wanted to come by and check up on how things are going."

"They're going relatively well," he admitted, trying very hard not to avoid her eyes or blush, because he remembered the last time they'd spoken. "Did you come through the weekend all right?"

Someone slipped into the library, mostly to return a couple of books. Except...

"Hello?"

It was said softly.

Karal came out from behind the counter, stretching a little. "Liir, hello!" he called, and smiled a welcome.

He looked rather spooked, mostly because he was expecting to get yelled at. For what, he couldn't say.

"Hello."

The floor tiles were interesting today.

"How're you?"

"I'm well," he said slowly, watching Liir with some concern. "Which I think maybe you're not."

Tidying seemed to have gotten under his skin, today, because Karal was dusting the shelves.

Hoshi gave Karal a shy smile as she brought back the books that she was returning.

Karal smiled back at her. "Hello, Hoshi. Can I help with anything?"

"I'm just looking for some books on Sanskrit today," said Hoshi. "I felt like working with a written language that doesn't use Roman alphabet, and Japanese kanji just isn't enough of a challenge for me."

He nodded. "Well, the language books are this way," he said, heading off towards them. "I don't know if I've seen anything on Sanskrit," he added. "But I'm quite sure the library will have something."

And now he was cleaning the windows.

Anyone would think, watching him, that he was trying to distract himself form worrying about why his horse had freaked out this morning.

Not that he'd ever use the phrase freak out.

John had never been to the library before, but his purpose didn't involve books. He watched his friend cleaning the windows with his head tilted to the side in confusion. "Karal?"

Karal turned around and smiled when he saw who it was. "John, hello. How are you?"

"I'm good," John replied, wondering how often Karal cleaned the windows at the library. "How've you been? Other than enjoying your work a little too much."

Karal blinked in puzzlement, then looked down at the cloth in his hand and flushed. "I was trying to keep busy," he explained, moving to stash it back under the counter where he'd gotten it from. "And for the most part, I'm well."

Lunch [23/01]

The library was closed, as per usual, to all but library staff.

Karal was sharing a sandwich with Altra.

It was Altra, so sharing consisted of Karal getting the bread and the lettuce, and Altra getting everything else.

Afternoon [23/01]

Altra had destroyed the feather duster in a sudden fit of shelf-leaping feline-osity.

There were bits of fluff and feather everywhere, which Karal was cleaning up.

Altra, looking supremely unconcerned, was sitting on top of the periodicals shelf, cleaning his whiskers.

Evey had had a particularly bad week, really. She was more than a little used to insanity by now, but it didn't mean that she wasn't likely to seek comfort and distraction where she could.

So she meandered down to the library to find something to read -- something on the ban lists at home, maybe, that she'd never even touched.

Of course, having seen the state the room was currently in, there was already a smile tugging at her lips as she peeked in the doorway. "I could come back later, if you're very busy with your feathers."

Karal groaned and put one hand over his face, laughing quietly.

Which of course transfered some pink feather fluff to his hair. "Altra decided today was a good day for him to practice being a cat."

Altra twitched his whiskers at Evey from the top of his shelf and didn't say anything.

"'lo, Altra," she said, smiling up at him. "Karal, you've got a bit of stuff in your hair, now. And really, perhaps he was protecting you from the...feathery exploded thing. Most cats seem to think it's their duty to destroy belongings. Or so I've observed."
