Karal was late, and he bolted into the library from the stable, robes flying and dusty. He skittered to a stop behind the counter, got everything ready, then opened the library.

That done, he settled behind the counter and started checking in books. Why yes, he was trying to pretend he'd been completely on time.

"If that were true, at least you'd have constant companionship. And Altra could hunt them instead of feather dusters," she replied, lifting her gaze up to smile at Altra.

Karal laughed at that. "Very true," he said, while Altra gave Evey a sardonic look. :It was an annoying feather duster. And Karal needed something to else do.:

"Were you not being productive enough?" she wondered, raising a brow at Karal.

He pretended to glare at Altra while he tried not to smile, in response to which the Firecat jumped down and sauntered over to Evey.

"I had plenty to do, it just didn't involve pandering to a Firecat."

:And that's where you went wrong,: Altra replied, mindvoice rich with amusement.

"Oh, I see. Silly you," Evey said, trying to keep her expression stern. She succeeded, but her eyes shone with amusement.

Altra rubbed against her leg. :I knew I liked you.:

Karal sighed and rubbed his forehead. "I think I'm outnumbered."

"Maybe a little," she conceded, crouching to scritch Altra's ears.

The Firecat purred and Karal leaned back against a shelf, smiling as he watched both of them. "Luckily, I don't mind."

"You're a better sport than I am, then," Evey said ruefully. "What do you do here, then?"

"Look after the books, mostly. Check them in and out, reshelve them, make sure they're all tidy and where they should be," he explained. "Tidy and clean, help anyone who needs it." He grinned at Altra. "Try and keep a Firecat busy."

"I imagine that's probably the most difficult," she remarked dryly.

Altra snorted. "I don't mind that either. And if I can find a book for him to read, that keeps him occupied."

"Yes, I'm sure it's very difficult to find one of those here," she said seriously, the corner of her mouth twitching slightly.

:I'm fussy,: Altra said smugly.

"Yes, you are," Karal agreed.

"Perhaps you should look for books on purple giraffes, too," she told Altra.

"I still haven't found any of those," Karal admitted while Altra rolled his eyes. :I think you made them up.:

"I did not," Evey protested. "Karal said there's everything here."
