Karal was late, and he bolted into the library from the stable, robes flying and dusty. He skittered to a stop behind the counter, got everything ready, then opened the library.

That done, he settled behind the counter and started checking in books. Why yes, he was trying to pretend he'd been completely on time.

"Okay. Just don't dwell too much on it. It'll pass," she said with a tiny smile. "How are you otherwise?"

"I know." The look he gave her was grateful, though, because however much he knew it hadn't been him, the memories did not sit well. "Other than that, I'm good," he said decisively. "I think Altra must have been something very embarrassing. He refuses to talk about it."

Jaina's eyes widened as that thought rolled around in her head, trying to make sense. "Altra turned into someone? I would have thought he'd be safe. Oops."

Karal laughed quietly. "He must have. He was hiding under the bed, muttering about how 'Firecats do not wear clothes, and the hat was simply ridiculous'," he quoted. "And then he stopped talking to me."

"I don't think I've ever been so sorry to not have run across a clothed, hat-wearing Firecat before," she said, trying her hardest not to laugh. Which was harder than she would have thought.

"I've made careful notes for my report to Solaris," he told her, finding it just as hard not to laugh. "Something so rare, needs to be recorded for future generations to, umm, appreciate."

That did get a laugh out of her. "You've got a fun little twisted side to you. I like it," she told him.

He blushed. "Thank you?"

"You're welcome. And you're blushing again." You know, helpfully pointing that out.

Which made him blush more. "Sunlord, I keep doing that. One day, I will stop blushing!"

"And on that day, I'll throw down my walking stick and do a very arthritic little dance," she teased.

He grinned at her. "And I'll have a nice cup of tea and a blanket waiting for you," he told her, still blushing, but he didn't care. "Because you're going to need a lie down after that!"

"So kind after all those years. Let's just hope I'm still lucid enough on that day to remember this conversation." She didn't even realize that she'd dropped her usual refusal to think that far ahead- even jokingly- for the moment.

"I've been trained to remember everything, if I need to, and I'm remembering this. I'll remind you," he promised.

Jaina frowned at herself. "My former nanny has a memory like yours. I don't know how I always seem to forget that the stuff I say in front of you can come back to haunt me."

He grinned. "I can remember it word for word, if I must, and," he frowned, trying to think how to explain, "put a sort of mental tag on it, so that I can find it again."

Jaina was quiet for a moment. "You know I'm trying to think of anything embarrassing I might have ever told you, right?"

Karal looked very innocent. "Do you want me to tell you?" he teased.

Since she couldn't remember anything off the top of her head, she was really curious. "Yes."

"And now you've caught me out," he said sheepishly. "I can't actually remember anything embarrassing you've told me. I rarely try and remember when I'm just talking with people."

"So it's something you can turn off?" she asked.

"It is, yes. This, for instance, I won't remember this, unless you want me to, because I'm not trying. But," he searched for an example, "you remember when I came to ask you what I should do about Tremane? I could recall that almost word for word if I needed to."

"Wow. I really wish I could do that," she admitted. "Maybe I need to brush up on my recall."

Karal shrugged one shoulder. "It's just what I've been trained for. It started when I was nine, so I've been doing it for a long time."

Jaina wasn't sure if that sounded young or old to start to her, but given her own training, she had no place to even really consider that. "Still, that's got to be good, especially considering what you do."
