Karal was late, and he bolted into the library from the stable, robes flying and dusty. He skittered to a stop behind the counter, got everything ready, then opened the library.

That done, he settled behind the counter and started checking in books. Why yes, he was trying to pretend he'd been completely on time.

Jaina was quiet for a moment. "You know I'm trying to think of anything embarrassing I might have ever told you, right?"

Karal looked very innocent. "Do you want me to tell you?" he teased.

Since she couldn't remember anything off the top of her head, she was really curious. "Yes."

"And now you've caught me out," he said sheepishly. "I can't actually remember anything embarrassing you've told me. I rarely try and remember when I'm just talking with people."

"So it's something you can turn off?" she asked.

"It is, yes. This, for instance, I won't remember this, unless you want me to, because I'm not trying. But," he searched for an example, "you remember when I came to ask you what I should do about Tremane? I could recall that almost word for word if I needed to."

"Wow. I really wish I could do that," she admitted. "Maybe I need to brush up on my recall."

Karal shrugged one shoulder. "It's just what I've been trained for. It started when I was nine, so I've been doing it for a long time."

Jaina wasn't sure if that sounded young or old to start to her, but given her own training, she had no place to even really consider that. "Still, that's got to be good, especially considering what you do."

"It is," he agreed. "And sometimes my master and I would be somewhere notes simply couldn't be taken, so I would just...remember."

"Anything else you can do like this?" she wondered, amazed she'd never asked that before.

"I can do the same with things I read," he offered. "And I read very quickly. It's not me, though, it's simply my training. Anyone could do it, if they'd been trained for it."

"I don't know a lot of people with that sort of attention span. Thought that might be due to too much time with some Jedi apprentices."

Karal gave her a small smile at that. "We were not given a choice, Jaina. We were told to learn and so we learned. It has stayed with me."

Jaina sighed at herself. "I have just far too many questions, you know. I could deluge you with them for hours," she warned. "Which I think I'm doing, sorry."

"No, please," he said, waving away the apology. "I'm very glad to see you, and happy to answer any questions. Truly, any questions at all."
