Library [25/01]

Karal was late, and he bolted into the library from the stable, robes flying and dusty. He skittered to a stop behind the counter, got everything ready, then opened the library.

That done, he settled behind the counter and started checking in books. Why yes, he was trying to pretend he'd been completely on time.

Karal folded his arms and looked at Liir sternly. Well, as sternly a she could, which admittedly wasn't very and was made from equal parts concern. "I'm very pleased you're using the tea set," he said, "but it is a concern to me. Is there anything I can do?"

It was a gamble to ask, but he desperately wanted to know. He tried to frame it in his mind, how it might come out, before he finally just came out with it.

"Do you know if Andrew is doing well? He was... upset. Er. The other day."

Karal shook his head. "I haven't talked with him since Monday," he replied. And given what they'd talked about, it was with a sinking feeling that he asked, "Liir? Did something happen?"

"He decided he didn't want something serious," he said evenly enough. As with the day it'd happened, those green green eyes were doing their best impersonation of a mirror.

"I said or did something and his hands started to shake. I was obviously hurting him, so I left as soon as I could.

"Teddy got me down yesterday afternoon."

"Got you down?" he asked even as he was processing that. Oh, Sunlord.

He nodded.

Then one hand patted the broom.

"I didn't want to land for a little while. That's all."

Karal sighed quietly. "I can understand that." There were times at the Cloister he'd ridden Trenor out and thought of never coming back. "I'm sure you didn't do anything wrong, though."

"You never think I do," he pointed out.

"I did miss a class though."

"When you actually do something wrong, I promise I will think you have." Karal shook his head at Liir. "Until then, I'll keep," he gave him a small smile, "irritating you with assurances that you haven't. And I've missed classes. While it's not a good habit to develop, sometimes it's inevitable."

"I'm going to go talk to my professor," he said, skimming over the rest. "Hopefully, he won't be too upset."

Karal didn't push. "That sounds like a good idea."

"I don't know what to say about missing class, though. It's not as if I had a good reason."

Being asleep ten stories up from the classroom isn't really an excuse.

Karal frowned, thinking. "Who's your professor?"

"Professor Winchester," he said. "I missed Fandom Invasions."

"Be honest with him. You don't have to tell him what happened, but just that something did, and you'll do your best to make sure it doesn't happen again," he advised. "He is a good man, he'll understand."

At least he knew he could say he wouldn't do it again. He'd learned the hard way not to repeat mistakes.

"That's all anyone can ask of you," he said gently.

"Then they're more forgiving than I'm used to," he said with a shake of his head.

He sighed.

"I should return these," and he held out a few books. They were on various crystals and their uses, mostly. There was also one from his study of memories.

Karal took them, looking at the titles curiously.

"It's for Inventiontronics," he admitted. "I think I'll have to use a crystal for my project and I was trying to figure out the right one."

"Oh?" Now he was looking curiously at Liir. "What are you inventing?"

"A protection for memories," he said, wondering how Karal would think of it. Everyone seemed to have a different opinion.

"Or rather, something to keep them in should they be taken or lost so that you can have them back."

"Glory, you can make such a thing?" he asked, eyes wide with surprise and no little wonder".

"I don't know. I've figured out what might work. But I won't know til I've tried."

"If you could create such a thing, it would be amazing," he said, mind already turning over the possibilities. "It could help so many people."
