Library [25/01]

Karal was late, and he bolted into the library from the stable, robes flying and dusty. He skittered to a stop behind the counter, got everything ready, then opened the library.

That done, he settled behind the counter and started checking in books. Why yes, he was trying to pretend he'd been completely on time.

He couldn't look at Karal.

"If I can. I don't even know if I can. I still can't find anything that remembers right."

"Everything I seem to think about the subject seems to startle people," he admitted. "If Professor Ambrose didn't think I was making sense, I'd be afraid I was just being crazy."

"Most things remember," he said plainly. His hand reached out to touch the counter.

"This wood remembers every touch, every book that's crossed it."

He shrugged.

"It's boring, but if you really want to know, it's there. They're not very clear and mostly in flashes, but it's there."

He pulled his hand away.

"It's finding something that'll remember like a person that's the problem. Because if it's not a memory, it's just information."

He shook his head.

"No. Because I'm not listening for it."

He smiled faintly.

"Things talk, but most people have other people to talk to. You only hear things, I guess, when you're lonely enough to listen."

"I stopped years ago," and he closed his eyes for a moment.

"Most things don't have much of any interest to say. And no one appreciates it. I just sounded silly. And--

"The first time I mentioned it to someone here, they assumed I might have invaded their privacy."

He shook his head.

"I have better things to listen to."
