Library [25/01]

Karal was late, and he bolted into the library from the stable, robes flying and dusty. He skittered to a stop behind the counter, got everything ready, then opened the library.

That done, he settled behind the counter and started checking in books. Why yes, he was trying to pretend he'd been completely on time.

Hoshi gave Karal a shy smile as she brought back the books that she was returning.

Karal smiled back at her. "Hello, Hoshi. Can I help with anything?"

"I'm just looking for some books on Sanskrit today," said Hoshi. "I felt like working with a written language that doesn't use Roman alphabet, and Japanese kanji just isn't enough of a challenge for me."

He nodded. "Well, the language books are this way," he said, heading off towards them. "I don't know if I've seen anything on Sanskrit," he added. "But I'm quite sure the library will have something."

"I'm sure there should be something. I've been through the language section a couple times already," said Hoshi. "How are your classes going so far? You don't seem to be having any problems in Ethics."

"I'm enjoying it. Professor Skywalker is, well, he has an interesting perspective on many things," he said. "The others are going well, too, I think. And yours?"

"World Mythology has been fascinating since we don't talk a lot about Earth-based mythology where I come from because Trek focuses so much on alien worlds. Fandom Invasions has been interesting too. Ethics is a bit tougher, but I like it, and at last this semester I'm not taking a Barney Stinson class," replied Hoshi.

"Oh, glory, yes!" Karal agreed. "His classes are appalling. I'm amazed he's permitted to teach here at all."

"I was his TA, so I got a good look at his madness," said Hoshi. She was still nursing a grudge from Barney's comments on the radio that she had no chance of acing his final when she thought she'd done very well.

Karal glanced around, then leaned forward. "I was always amazed that you didn't simply hit him with something. I don't think my patience would have stood for being his TA."

"Back home, I was taught to treat my instructors with deference, so I kept feeling that he deserved my respect no matter how badly he acted," said Hoshi. "Plus the fact that he picked me as his TA probably appealed to my pride just a little bit."

"I was the same. The teachers were to be treated with the greatest of respect." he folded his arms and looked stubborn. "Professor Stinson is not a teacher, for all that he calls himself one."

"You've got to wonder how he got a job as a teacher in the first place," said Hoshi.

"And I do, often." He looked sheepish for a momnet. "I put my horse in his office, once."

Hoshi was not a giggler, but this definitely a good time to make an exception. "No kidding?" she asked, amused. "I would have loved to see his reaction. Was that why he kept picking on you in class?"

"No, no, I suspect that was wholly my own fault. I kept, well," he blushed a little, "antagonising him. But, glory, the things he was teaching people!"

"At least you didn't put up with his nonsense," said Hoshi. "I kept feeding him the answers he was looking for, thinking it would get me a better grade."

"There's nothing wrong with that." He went pink around the ears. "Did you, umm, take the bonus test?" He couldn't quite bring himself to ask: Did you run naked through town.

Hoshi's cheeks turned pink. "I said I wasn't going to do it, but I had a little mishap in the park involving my clothing and a tree branch, and I ended up doing it anyway," she explained. "It got on the radio too, so it counted."

Karal was staring at her, wide-eyed. "Oh, glory, that must have been quite a mishap!"

"Thank goodness I didn't run into anyone on my way back to the dorms," said Hoshi, cringing.

"I did it as well," he admitted. "And then Andrew joined me, so at least you weren't alone."

"Plus I ran into my big sibling Sam when he decided to give it a try as well," said Hoshi. "But hey, this was Barney's class. I think I'd be amazed if anyone kept their clothes on that day."
