Flight & Flying [Friday, June 22, 2nd period]

Anakin was waiting for the students on the top of the apartment building in town, leaning up against a Lambda-class Imperial shuttle.

"Welcome to the Virgo," he said with a small smile before giving them a quick rundown of the general specifications of the ship. "It's twenty meters long and is generally used to ferry soldiers or cargo back home," he said. "It's also equipped with a hyperdrive--which we will not be using--as well as two forward-facing double laser cannons, two wing-mounted double cannons, and a rear-facing double laser cannon." He met each student's eyes. "Which we will definitely not be using. We're going to do a quick swing around the system here--we won't go out as far as Pluto, but since it's not a planet any longer, I doubt it will be that offended."

He waved a hand towards the ramp. "Come aboard."

Anakin, after shooting Aeryn a small smile, opened a closet to reveal a stack of Space Trooper outfits.

"These are not at all necessary," he said, focusing for a moment on his son, "but I know some of you are a little worried about actually being in space. We're completely safe in here, but if you feel like being extra cautious," he left the "and looking like an idiot" part unspoken, but it was in his tone, "feel free to suit up."

Luke took one look at the suits, crossed his arms over his chest and made a face. "I'm not wearing one," he said firmly.

Jaina raised a critical eyebrow at the suit, and decided for several reasons, she was just going to stay very far away from it.

Gavin picked up the Space Trooper outfits and, after staring at it for a long moment, decided against not wearing it.

"No way."

Inara decided she didn't need to wear one of the suits. And only some of that was not wanting to appear stupid-looking in front of Gavin.

Anders kind of stared at the outfit for a moment.

"I am so not dressing up to look like a plastic Cylon. No frakkin' way."

Z shook her head. "I'll pass on the tacky plastic outfit, thanks."

Oooh, look, Earth!

Anakin took the shuttle up into space himself. Not that he didn't trust some of the pilots in the group, but he trusted himself more.

"Before we begin taking turns flying the shuttle," he said, turning the shuttle around so that the Earth filled the viewports, "I wanted you to see what where we came from looks like from out here."

Naomi had seen the view of Earth from space before but it was still incredible to look at.

Inara watched the planet carefully, unable to believe how peaceful it looked. This was definitely a sight of myth and legend, and she would be the only person on Shinon who had seen it. Ever.

Billy had actually been out in space before with Ms. Frizzle's class, but it still looked incredible.

Jaina was more than ready to take turn at this. The ship was bigger than the TIE she flew through one of these last time, but she was pretty sure she could manage it.

There's a lot of empty space between planets, fortunately. If this is your first time up in space, here's the place to try flying. Way, way far away from anything you can hit.

Mel opted out of the Asteroid Belt because crashing is only fun in a Sim. She was flying way more cautious than when she usually did in class.

Again. Not a sim.

Lucas was early, as expected. He had a backpack slung over his shoulder and was wearing clothing that definitely wasn't suited for hot weather. "Master Skywalker," Lucas greeted. "I'm here for the guided tour." He barely resisted the urge to roll his eyes, but it was mostly at himself.
