Flight & Flying [Friday, June 22, 2nd period]

Anakin was waiting for the students on the top of the apartment building in town, leaning up against a Lambda-class Imperial shuttle.

"Welcome to the Virgo," he said with a small smile before giving them a quick rundown of the general specifications of the ship. "It's twenty meters long and is generally used to ferry soldiers or cargo back home," he said. "It's also equipped with a hyperdrive--which we will not be using--as well as two forward-facing double laser cannons, two wing-mounted double cannons, and a rear-facing double laser cannon." He met each student's eyes. "Which we will definitely not be using. We're going to do a quick swing around the system here--we won't go out as far as Pluto, but since it's not a planet any longer, I doubt it will be that offended."

He waved a hand towards the ramp. "Come aboard."

"If we weren't fighting by noon it was because one of us was in the clinic or a prison," Anakin said fondly.

Laughing, Inara said, "I wish I had a friend like that. It sounds wonderful."

"He was the better half of me," Anakin admitted. "But I had awesome hair, so it evened out."

"Having good hair is very important," she agreed, biting the inside of her cheek to keep from laughing.

Anakin smiled over at her. "It's all right to laugh," he said. "I loved him like a brother, and miss him every day, but he had his less endearing qualities, too."

He shook his head, snickering to himself. "Oh, he was so mad when he discovered what the action figures of him were missing. 'Not that I want to be traumatizing the younglings, Anakin, but a little bit of anatomic accuracy would not be amiss,'" he quoted in a Very Proper accent.

"Oh, like what?" Inara liked hearing about other people--it relaxed her, "Action figures? What are those? Are they supposed to be anatomically correct?"

Anakin held out his hands. "Little people, made of plastic," he explained. "They are toys for younglings." He grinned. "And Jaye--she brought back a collection tiny Obi-Wans. He was a little embarrassed."

"They made toys for children? Is that right?" She asked, a little confused by the terminology, "In the image of your friend? He must have been quite important."

"Before the tide of war turned against us, tales of the Jedi were used as bedtime stories," Anakin said, smiling. "Obi-Wan was one of our best. We made a good team."

"Do you have a favorite story?"

"How Obi-Wan became a knight," Anakin replied promptly. "The story is a tragic one, but it shows just what kind of a man he was. Even in the worst kind of stress --hanging by one hand over a cavernous abyss with the fatally wounded body of his Master above him, along with his Master's murderer--he didn't back down from what he thought was right. In all of my time with him, he never took a single step to tarnish the name of the Jedi." He sighed. "If only we'd all been that dedicated."

Inara couldn't help blinking at Anakin. "How horrible for him. That must have been terribly difficult for him to get past, if he ever did.""

"It was a wound that never healed cleanly," Anakin admitted, "but he rarely talked about it."

"I'm sorry," she said, with no idea why she was sympathizing with a man she'd never met. "No wonder you want to get away sometimes. It's so...peaceful out here."

Anakin smiled softly. "Out here, the universe makes sense. If only because there aren't any people to muck it up."

"Or planets, or asteroids, or ships..." Inara sighed. "Why does peace have to be so lonely?"

Anakin gave her a tired smile, looking much, much older than what his body suggested. "A question for the ages. But trying to exterminate all the opposing thoughts...trust me, terrible plan."

"I'll try to remember that," she nodded, feeling a very strange urge to just...tuck him into bed with a teddy bear somewhere and leave a small light burning.
