Flight & Flying [Friday, June 22, 2nd period]

Anakin was waiting for the students on the top of the apartment building in town, leaning up against a Lambda-class Imperial shuttle.

"Welcome to the Virgo," he said with a small smile before giving them a quick rundown of the general specifications of the ship. "It's twenty meters long and is generally used to ferry soldiers or cargo back home," he said. "It's also equipped with a hyperdrive--which we will not be using--as well as two forward-facing double laser cannons, two wing-mounted double cannons, and a rear-facing double laser cannon." He met each student's eyes. "Which we will definitely not be using. We're going to do a quick swing around the system here--we won't go out as far as Pluto, but since it's not a planet any longer, I doubt it will be that offended."

He waved a hand towards the ramp. "Come aboard."

Mel opted out of the Asteroid Belt because crashing is only fun in a Sim. She was flying way more cautious than when she usually did in class.

Again. Not a sim.

"Yeah, well it's not just me on this boat," Mel said with a small smile but increasing the speed a bit as she got comfortable.

Like Mel, Anders opted way, way out of the asteroid belt on grounds of Very Much Not Simulated. He didn't really have any desire to crash the shuttle and possibly get himself or his classmates killed on his birthday.

Anders exhaled slowly. "Yeah," he said. Lots of space, nothing to hit for light-years around . . . nothing to be nervous about, right?

Naomi was definitely more comfortable with the idea of flying in empty space than in the asteroid belt so she opted for flying in empty space.

Naomi nodded, trying not to feel nervous about this, "ready," she said.

Since it was his first time really flying in space and he was rather impressed with the whole thing, John sat back and enjoyed watching others take the shuttle through the asteroid belt. He took his turn flying in empty space.

John grinned and slid into the copilot seat, "Yes, sir!"

She didn't think she was up to the Asteroid belt, but Isabel happily took a turn in open space. "Can we buzz the Cassini satellite that's studying Saturn? It would give NASA something to talk about."

"Probably no," she laughed. "But just think, we'd give Weekly World News their headlines for the next decade."

"By the way, I'm sorry I had to cancel on Wednesday. My dad had an unexpected trip to Baltimore come up, so my mom came with him and I went up there to spend some time with them."

Inara had no illusions about where she fell in the experienced/inexperienced pilot spectrum.

She climbed into the seat and hoped someone would distract her.

"Mostly?" Inara took a deep breath and released it, then smiled back at him, "Thank you for this."

"Mind if I give it a go?" Billy asked, looking interestedly at the control panel.

"Thanks." Billy nodded, and settled into the pilot's seat, strapping himself in. He took a quick moment to make sure he knew where everything was, then, with a gentle touch, began to pilot the shuttle. Not in any particular direction, but he decided to keep the front pointed away from anything that looked like it wanted to hit them.

Z didn't trust herself enough for the asteroid belt, but this she figured she could handle without getting yelled at. There was nothing to hit, after all.

Z took the seat, mentally kicking herself for not bringing an apple. Of course, Professor Skywalker might not have gotten the significance of the apple...

"Okay. Now what?"
