Flight & Flying [Friday, June 22, 2nd period]

Anakin was waiting for the students on the top of the apartment building in town, leaning up against a Lambda-class Imperial shuttle.

"Welcome to the Virgo," he said with a small smile before giving them a quick rundown of the general specifications of the ship. "It's twenty meters long and is generally used to ferry soldiers or cargo back home," he said. "It's also equipped with a hyperdrive--which we will not be using--as well as two forward-facing double laser cannons, two wing-mounted double cannons, and a rear-facing double laser cannon." He met each student's eyes. "Which we will definitely not be using. We're going to do a quick swing around the system here--we won't go out as far as Pluto, but since it's not a planet any longer, I doubt it will be that offended."

He waved a hand towards the ramp. "Come aboard."

Anakin smiled as Anders slid into the other seat up in the cockpit. "Ready?" he asked.

Anders exhaled slowly. "Yeah," he said. Lots of space, nothing to hit for light-years around . . . nothing to be nervous about, right?

"Nothing's going to happen," Anakin said quietly. "Take your time."

Anders ran his hands over the controls, getting oriented. "Acting like I've never been up in space before," he said half to himself. "Well, I've never been behind the controls before. Just a few trips to Gemenon for tournaments and stuff . . ."

"Seriously?" Anders relaxed a little bit more, maybe even visibly. "Okay then."

Carefully at first, then with a little more confidence, he kicked in the acceleration, and the lack of resistance was a definite thrill. "Flying is so much better out of atmosphere, holy frak."

"Atmosphere has its own challenges," Anakin agreed, "but you'll never spin faster or corner better than you will out here. Give it a try."

"Awesome." Anders put more juice into the engines and went into a hard turn. "Oh, that's frakking sweet!" he whooped. And reversed directions to do it again.

Anakin grinned, eyes full of little-boy glee. "Good."

He had to go into a roll now. He had to. This was way too much fun.

"The sims just aren't quite as much fun as this."

"Not even close," Anakin admitted, "but I've been doing this for decades, so I'm a little sensitive to the differences."

"I'm more of a feet-on-the-ground guy, but I can see why you pilot types love this so much," Anders said as he brought the shuttle out of its roll, a little shakily. He was flushed with exhilaration, and grinning. "I guess I should let someone else have fun, though."
