Wilderness Survival - Week 4 | Thursday Morning, A Clearing in the Woods

Callisto had two lock boxes today, rather than just one. She pointed at the first box. "Shoes."

Then she pointed at the second box. "Now your clothes. Everything except your underwear."

After everyone had removed their clothing and placed it in the box, Callisto continued "If you spend a prolonged period of time in the wilderness, then it is more than likely whatever clothing you were wearing at the time will come under a considerable amount of wear and tear, especially if it wasn't designed for the environment you're in. The results can be… unpleasant to say the least.

"Luckily, it is possible to repair, and even make clothing from items found in the wilderness. Animal skins, some kinds of tree barks, vines, sinew. The possibilities, if not endless, are at least more varied than you'd think. Even luckier for you, I'm not making you hunt and forage for the raw materials.

"I think you can guess the rest of today's lesson. Use the materials I've provided to make garments to replace the ones you were wearing before. I know the equipment might be a primitive compared to what some of you may be used to, all bone needles and stone knives, but well, you'll just have to deal.

"Get to it," Callisto said. "And as an extra incentive, you're not getting your clothes back until next week, so make sure that you put a decent effort into the clothes."

Grabbing some animal skins, sinew, a needle and a knife, Cameron sat down on the grabs. How hard could it be after all?

He had no clue where to start.

Molly sat down next to Cam. "Good thing Gert taught me how to hand sew," she said as she sorted out all of the supplies she'd grabbed. "Although, never with animal skins and sinew."

Cameron looked at Molly for a second, blushed and then made a point to concentrate on the animal skins. "Care to impart some words of wisdom?"

Molly had seen Cameron in his boxers before, but she found it easier if she didn't look directly at him. "Don't make your stitches too big and don't pull the thread too tight," she said. "I don't think that matters so much with this though.

Sorting out the skins she'd grabbed, she found one that would need minimal cutting to make a skirt and stood up to wrap it around her waist to see where she should cut it.

Parker can't help but smirk a little at Cam's expression. And, of course, the shirtlessness. And pantslessness.

"Having fun, Parkie?" Cameron grumbled.

"More than some people." She grinned. "You could make a nice buckskin kilt out of that, if you could find something to fasten it."

Yeah, Aeryn has no idea what to do with this, but she makes an effort. A really bad effort.

Buffy gave the animal skins a thoughtful look. Of course it'd never be truly stylish, but perhaps she could do something with it... She'd have to, because no way was she walking back to school in her underwear.

Sam sat down next to Buffy - at least, he thought it was Buffy, but he was trying not to look at anyone for more than a few seconds - and grabbed some animal skins for himself. Yes, staring at them and the ground seemed like a very good option right now.

Buffy looked over to smile at whoever had sat down beside her and ended up going, "Guh wibble... I mean, hi! Yeah. Totally hi!"

Bridge looks over the skins, selects a few, and starts to work sewing them together with a needle and some sinew.

"I'd say this is getting ridiculous, but who knows?" Janet glared at the skins. "Maybe we'll get stuck in Locker 327 for a year and need the knowledge."

OOC: Now with the icon I meant to use.

Bridge nods. "Or stuck in an alternate dimension or something," he adds. "It's happened before."

"God, this is going to look like a bad version of Monkey Planet," Parker muttered in resignation. Fur bikinis are *not* her thing. But that's what it's going to end up being.

On the other hand? The scenery around her was... not bad at all.

She hid a grin from Sam, Alec, Cam, and the other guys, and tried to fasten the furs together with vines.

"At least all those sessions on stitches in medical school first aid lessons are going to be put to use here," said Janet, still glaring at the skins.

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2006-06-15 04:08 pm (UTC)(link)
"Thank you, Sisters of Perpetual Confusion," Parker agreed sarcastically. "Who knew embroidery would ever be useful for anything." She grabbed a couple of vines, and threaded them through the bone needle, then started looking for shells.

Re: Clothes Making (WS - Wk4)

[identity profile] x5-alec.livejournal.com 2006-06-15 04:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Alec took some skins and the tools available and found somewhere to sit that he wouldn't be regretting later. Otherwise, being naked? Still not really a problem, unless he thought about how Dean was going to take hearing about it.

He set to work on making some clothing. It wouldn't be particularly pretty, but as long as they worked, he'd be satisfied.

[personal profile] likethegun 2006-06-15 06:01 pm (UTC)(link)
"Why aren't you wearing anything?" Sam called to Alec. At least, he called it in the general direction in which he thought Alec was sitting. Because looking? Not an option. "We were supposed to keep our underwear."

Re: Clothes Making (WS - Wk4)

[identity profile] x5-alec.livejournal.com 2006-06-15 06:18 pm (UTC)(link)
"I wasn't wearing any," he called back, trying to push a bone needle through heavy fur.

All the materials he figured he'd need were sitting right in front of him, except Alphonse had no freakin' clue how to put them together. So he might've stared at them for a while before attempting.

"Don't make your stitches too big and don't pull the thread too tight," Cameron adviced as he noticed Alphonse looking as lost as him. "At least, that's what I'm being told."

"Sounds like it might work, thanks," he said. He still fumbled a bit with the needle and grumbled, "I wonder if she'd let us use alternative methods to do this."

The funny part was, Joxer was actually half decent at this. His armor was self-made, after all.

He was actually enjoying himself, even.
