Wilderness Survival - Week 4 | Thursday Morning, A Clearing in the Woods

Callisto had two lock boxes today, rather than just one. She pointed at the first box. "Shoes."

Then she pointed at the second box. "Now your clothes. Everything except your underwear."

After everyone had removed their clothing and placed it in the box, Callisto continued "If you spend a prolonged period of time in the wilderness, then it is more than likely whatever clothing you were wearing at the time will come under a considerable amount of wear and tear, especially if it wasn't designed for the environment you're in. The results can be… unpleasant to say the least.

"Luckily, it is possible to repair, and even make clothing from items found in the wilderness. Animal skins, some kinds of tree barks, vines, sinew. The possibilities, if not endless, are at least more varied than you'd think. Even luckier for you, I'm not making you hunt and forage for the raw materials.

"I think you can guess the rest of today's lesson. Use the materials I've provided to make garments to replace the ones you were wearing before. I know the equipment might be a primitive compared to what some of you may be used to, all bone needles and stone knives, but well, you'll just have to deal.

"Get to it," Callisto said. "And as an extra incentive, you're not getting your clothes back until next week, so make sure that you put a decent effort into the clothes."

Molly sat down next to Cam. "Good thing Gert taught me how to hand sew," she said as she sorted out all of the supplies she'd grabbed. "Although, never with animal skins and sinew."

Cameron looked at Molly for a second, blushed and then made a point to concentrate on the animal skins. "Care to impart some words of wisdom?"

Molly had seen Cameron in his boxers before, but she found it easier if she didn't look directly at him. "Don't make your stitches too big and don't pull the thread too tight," she said. "I don't think that matters so much with this though.

Sorting out the skins she'd grabbed, she found one that would need minimal cutting to make a skirt and stood up to wrap it around her waist to see where she should cut it.

"This is stupid," Cameron mumbled. "It's not like I'm going to find skins like this just lying around in the wilderness when we need it. Not that I'm asking to learn how to kill an animal and process it, it's just..." He scowled in Callisto's general direction.

Molly looked down at him. "You know that this is probably your fault," she said with a teasing grin.

Forgetting the whole not looking thing, Cameron snapped around to stare at Molly. "Is not. She's just in a foul mood. I might have poked her a bit, but... You think it's my fault?" he asked, worried.

"Not really," Molly said looking down at her make-shift skirt. Marking a couple places with her fingers, she pulled it off and sat down again. "Us not getting our clothes back after class? Totally your fault." She grinned at him before picking up her knife to trim the skin.

"Great," Cameron sighed, then realised he was staring and quickly looked back at the skins. "Maybe I should just make a cape or something."

Molly snickered at that mental image.

"Callisto will just get more mad at you if you don't at least try. Do you want me to help you?"

Cameron mumbled something underneath his breath and shook his head. "Nah, it's alright. I'll manage something." It would just look like a furry potatoe sack.

"Okay," she said and started sewing her skirt. "I may need your help measuring my top. If you don't mind."

Cue to looking up again and staring at Molly. "What? How?"

Molly set aside the skirt and picked up the other skin she'd selected. "Here." She handed it to him. "Hold this up against my back and tell me how wide it should be. Don't worry about getting a proper fit. I just don't want to cut it too narrow."

"Okay." It was purely imagination that his voice went up a notch or two. Clearing his throat he held up the fur against her back and tried not to stare. "Uh, now what?"

Re: Clothes Making (WS - Wk4)

[identity profile] bruiser-in-pink.livejournal.com 2006-06-15 04:43 pm (UTC)(link)
She turned her head to talk to him. "Mark it with your fingers along one edge at about my shoulder width and then bring it back around front so that I can cut it."

Re: Clothes Making (WS - Wk4)

[identity profile] cameronmitchell.livejournal.com 2006-06-15 04:48 pm (UTC)(link)
"Front. Right. Of course," Cameron mumbled underneath his breath as he concentrated hard on just taking the measures and not getting distracted.

"Okay, I think I got it," he said as he pulled back and debated that whole front thing.

When Cam came back around front, she took the skin from him, holding it at the same points he had been and briefly held it up to herself to make sure that it was wide enough across the front as well. Then she laid it out on the ground in front of her, replaced her right hand with her foot to mark the spot and notched the skin at the proper width along the edge with her knife.

"See?" she said looking up at Cam with a grin. "Now I know how wide to make it."

She left the skin on the ground for now and went back to sewing her skirt.

Cameron just nodded mutely as he probably saw something, but not what he was supposed to.

Right. Clothes making. Cameron shook his head and motioned to his pile of furs. Realising that he could in fact talk, he cleared his throat. "Nope. I'm fine. She might get pissed if you help," he said and quickly went to pick them up.

"If you're sure," she said and went back to her skirt.

"Yeah, no need to get anyone else in the dog house," Cameron sighed.

"Callisto likes me," Molly said with a grin. "I'm sure she'd let me help you."

[identity profile] cameronmitchell.livejournal.com 2006-06-15 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Cameron considered it for a moment before shaking his head again. "No, I should do this on my own."

"Okay." Molly shrugged and moved on to cutting out and sewing her top.
