Wilderness Survival - Week 4 | Thursday Morning, A Clearing in the Woods

Callisto had two lock boxes today, rather than just one. She pointed at the first box. "Shoes."

Then she pointed at the second box. "Now your clothes. Everything except your underwear."

After everyone had removed their clothing and placed it in the box, Callisto continued "If you spend a prolonged period of time in the wilderness, then it is more than likely whatever clothing you were wearing at the time will come under a considerable amount of wear and tear, especially if it wasn't designed for the environment you're in. The results can be… unpleasant to say the least.

"Luckily, it is possible to repair, and even make clothing from items found in the wilderness. Animal skins, some kinds of tree barks, vines, sinew. The possibilities, if not endless, are at least more varied than you'd think. Even luckier for you, I'm not making you hunt and forage for the raw materials.

"I think you can guess the rest of today's lesson. Use the materials I've provided to make garments to replace the ones you were wearing before. I know the equipment might be a primitive compared to what some of you may be used to, all bone needles and stone knives, but well, you'll just have to deal.

"Get to it," Callisto said. "And as an extra incentive, you're not getting your clothes back until next week, so make sure that you put a decent effort into the clothes."

"Front. Right. Of course," Cameron mumbled underneath his breath as he concentrated hard on just taking the measures and not getting distracted.

"Okay, I think I got it," he said as he pulled back and debated that whole front thing.

When Cam came back around front, she took the skin from him, holding it at the same points he had been and briefly held it up to herself to make sure that it was wide enough across the front as well. Then she laid it out on the ground in front of her, replaced her right hand with her foot to mark the spot and notched the skin at the proper width along the edge with her knife.

"See?" she said looking up at Cam with a grin. "Now I know how wide to make it."

She left the skin on the ground for now and went back to sewing her skirt.

Cameron just nodded mutely as he probably saw something, but not what he was supposed to.

Molly looked back at him as he continued to watch her. "You want me to help you with your?"

Right. Clothes making. Cameron shook his head and motioned to his pile of furs. Realising that he could in fact talk, he cleared his throat. "Nope. I'm fine. She might get pissed if you help," he said and quickly went to pick them up.

"If you're sure," she said and went back to her skirt.

"Yeah, no need to get anyone else in the dog house," Cameron sighed.

"Callisto likes me," Molly said with a grin. "I'm sure she'd let me help you."

Cameron considered it for a moment before shaking his head again. "No, I should do this on my own."

"Okay." Molly shrugged and moved on to cutting out and sewing her top.

"Right," Cameron sighed and went back to attacking his own furs. Quite literally.

Molly watched him with amusement as she worked on her own clothes. She'd help him if he asked, but otherwise she wasn't going to offer again.

Finally, when she was done with her clothes, she put them on and stood up to show them off. "How do they look? Think they'd hold up in the wild?"

Cameron looked up from his potato sack and grinned. "Looks fine. If we ever need to go 'Lord of the Flies', you get to do the clothes."

"Nu-uh," Molly said. "If we do ever have to go tribal, first thing I'll do is make you learn how to do it yourself."

"Or I can just stop growing and wear the same clothes forever," Cameron said with a scowl at the not so much cooperating skins.

"Until they fall off of you from wear and tear," she pointed out.

"You wouldn't let me go naked, would you?" Cameron tried his best puppy eyes look.

Molly grinned at him and blushed a little. She sat down next to him and leaned over to whisper in his ear. "If you leave it up to me, I'll make you a kilt and nothing else."

Cameron spluttered and stared at her before breaking into a smile. "Is that so?"

Molly blushed more. "Maybe."

"Hmmm, I'll have to keep it in mind," he said and leaned over to kiss her cheek.

Molly smiled at him and sat back to watch him work on his potato sack.
