Wilderness Survival - Week 4 | Thursday Morning, A Clearing in the Woods

Callisto had two lock boxes today, rather than just one. She pointed at the first box. "Shoes."

Then she pointed at the second box. "Now your clothes. Everything except your underwear."

After everyone had removed their clothing and placed it in the box, Callisto continued "If you spend a prolonged period of time in the wilderness, then it is more than likely whatever clothing you were wearing at the time will come under a considerable amount of wear and tear, especially if it wasn't designed for the environment you're in. The results can be… unpleasant to say the least.

"Luckily, it is possible to repair, and even make clothing from items found in the wilderness. Animal skins, some kinds of tree barks, vines, sinew. The possibilities, if not endless, are at least more varied than you'd think. Even luckier for you, I'm not making you hunt and forage for the raw materials.

"I think you can guess the rest of today's lesson. Use the materials I've provided to make garments to replace the ones you were wearing before. I know the equipment might be a primitive compared to what some of you may be used to, all bone needles and stone knives, but well, you'll just have to deal.

"Get to it," Callisto said. "And as an extra incentive, you're not getting your clothes back until next week, so make sure that you put a decent effort into the clothes."

Alphonse grinned slightly at that. "Well, I could just as easily use alchemy to make this stuff into something I wouldn't be embarassed about walking around in," he replied, trying to stitch some animal skins together. It was coming out pretty crappy looking, to say the least. "It's what I normally do when I ruin my clothes. But I'm not sure if Callisto would let me."

Cameron looked over at Callisto. "Yeah, I don't know either. Technically it's about you surviving in the wilderness so it should be alright, but she isn't in a happy mood," he went back to his own stitching efforts. "Wait until you're sure she isn't looking?"

"Which is why I'm afraid to ask," Alphonse admitted a bit sheepishly; he carefully peeked over his shoulder to look at Callisto as well. "I guess I could do something I could get away with for now and fix it up later after class."

Cameron nodded and grabbed on of the larger skins. "Can you work in the dark?" he asked, motioning that he could put the skin over his hands.

"Yeah. I don't need to see what I'm doing as much as know what I'm doing."

"I have no idea how that works, but it should make it easier to hide it," Cameron said with a small as he handed the skin to Alphonse.

"Right," he agreed. Alphonse drew a small array into the dirt (for his gloves were under hostage, woe) and piled other various skin pieces over it. After grabbing the larger skin and throwing it on top, Alphonse slid his hands underneath and started the transmutation, and prayed the covering hid most of the glow the array emitted. When he was finished, he pulled out a somewhat decent looking t-shirt thing. "Okay, hopefully this'll work."

"Now that is handy," Cameron said, slightly in awe, as he looked from the t-shirt to his own potato sack.

"It sure is," Alphonse replied, beaming somewhat. He noticed Cameron's potato sack and offered, "Do you want me to fix that up for you too?"

Cameron shook his head. "Nah, I'm fine. Callisto's not too happy with me as it is, I probably shouldn't tempt faith. Thanks for the offer, though."

"Alright then," he said. "Thanks for helping me cover up, then."

Re: Clothes Making (WS - Wk4)

[identity profile] cameronmitchell.livejournal.com 2006-06-15 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
"No problem," Cameron said with a smile. "That alchemy thing reminds me of how this kid made me a sword from a lamp post back in september."

[identity profile] kitty--fetish.livejournal.com 2006-06-15 07:04 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh?" Alphonse looked interested. "Who did that?"

[identity profile] cameronmitchell.livejournal.com 2006-06-15 07:11 pm (UTC)(link)
"Ed something," Cameron replied and managed to stab himself in the finger with his needle. "I haven't seen him much afterwards, it was sort of mid zombie battle, but that sword has saved my life a couple of times now."

Re: Clothes Making (WS - Wk4)

[identity profile] kitty--fetish.livejournal.com 2006-06-15 07:15 pm (UTC)(link)
"Ah, Edward Elric," Alphonse corrected with a smile. "He would be my brother."

Re: Clothes Making (WS - Wk4)

[identity profile] cameronmitchell.livejournal.com 2006-06-15 07:18 pm (UTC)(link)
"That would explain it," Cameron said as he inspected his skins. He doubted they were going to get much better. "This alchemy thingie runs into the family?"

Re: Clothes Making (WS - Wk4)

[identity profile] kitty--fetish.livejournal.com 2006-06-15 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
"You could say that," he said. "Our father was an alchemist too, so when he left home he also left all his books and studies behind. We were little when we got ahold of one of his books and tried to figure it out for ourselves, and when our mom found out what we were doing, she let us into his study room."

[identity profile] cameronmitchell.livejournal.com 2006-06-15 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Cameron pulled on his skins. The whole thing was way too loose, but he didn't care much. "So it's something anyone can learn?"

Re: Clothes Making (WS - Wk4)

[identity profile] kitty--fetish.livejournal.com 2006-06-16 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
"Well, sort of," Alphonse answered. "In theory it's possible for anyone to do, but in actuality if requires a lot of things to perform. You need to understand science a great deal and have the physical capabilities, to name a couple."

Re: Clothes Making (WS - Wk4)

[identity profile] cameronmitchell.livejournal.com 2006-06-16 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Cameron grinned. "With other words, it goes way above my head."

Re: Clothes Making (WS - Wk4)

[identity profile] kitty--fetish.livejournal.com 2006-06-16 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
"That seems to be the usual response I get," he said, amused. "I won't say it's that easy, all though it wasn't entirely too difficult for me, either. It just takes many years of practice. Once you do, it's as you said; very handy to have on you."

Re: Clothes Making (WS - Wk4)

[identity profile] cameronmitchell.livejournal.com 2006-06-16 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
"It better be if it takes you years of training," Cameron said as he was starting to realise just how badly he'd stitched his makeshift clothes. "Unlikes some people around here, science isn't exactly my thing. And neither is making clothes for that matter."

Re: Clothes Making (WS - Wk4)

[identity profile] kitty--fetish.livejournal.com 2006-06-16 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
"I'd have to agree with you on the latter, I've never had to sew anything before," Alphonse rose an eyebrow at Cameron's attempt at clothes. "You sure you don't want any help with that?"

Re: Clothes Making (WS - Wk4)

[identity profile] cameronmitchell.livejournal.com 2006-06-16 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
"Yep," he tugged at the shoulder to keep his clothes up. "I'm guessing that if I look pathetic enough, she might not actually kill me. Think it will work?"

Re: Clothes Making (WS - Wk4)

[identity profile] kitty--fetish.livejournal.com 2006-06-16 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
"I suppose..." Alphonse blinked. It sounded like a good idea, he guessed, though he didn't know Callisto enough to really say. "Do I want to know what happened to upset her this much?"
