First Aid, 5/30, Session 2

Elliot waited for the class to assemble and then began her lesson. A variety of handouts described the conditions she named.

"Hey. You guys did great in a tough situation last week. I was really impressed by the emergency management skills you showed."

"This week, we're getting into the nitty-gritty of emergencies affecting the respiratory system, which is how you breathe. You need to breathe so your body can convert oxygen in the air into the oxygen that fuels your body. The most common emergencies involving breathing are choking and near-drowning, but people may also stop breathing because of allergies or asthma. And then there's hyperventilation, which is usually psychosomatic. Not fun, but psychosomatic. About all you can do to stop that is try to take deep breaths."

"Today, I'm going to have you practice the Heimlich Maneuver and rescue breathing. Heimlich hurts like a bitch if you do it right -- seriously, you need to squeeze so hard you think you might break the person's ribs. So practice it on the danger-shop generated people in that room. If you know how to do it on an adult, try it on one of the babies or pregnant women."

"After that, pair up and go practice rescue breathing. You can make your own pairs for that. And, guys, there's nothing gay about it, even if you are afraid of boykissy."

"Oh, and one more thing? Last week, I didn't really do introductions, but I probably should. Tell us your name, age, any experience you have with first aid, and if there's anything weird about your physiology that I might want to know for this workshop. If you aren't comfortable saying it out loud, come see me after the session."

"And finally, the rules; one absence is totally fine. Two unexcused absences, and you get detention. So show up."

"That's it, guys. Go for it."

[OOC: OCD's up. Pretend I used the introductions thread instead of sign-in on purpose. We have 15 people in this class -- if anyone is hanging on the rescue breathing as of tomorrow morning, they'll get to work with either Elliot or one of the multipliers. Also? If your character has a truly major problem with the rescue breathing exercise, please let me know in the OOC thread.]

Dawn looked around nervously for a partner.

Isabel joined Dawn. "I thought there were supposed to be practice dummies for this."

"Maybe they decided this would be more hygenic?"

"They haven't heard of Lysol wipes?" she asked. Isabel glanced over to where Jamie was watching them. "Do you think they're nervous or something?"

Jamie is there. He's staying from Izzy and Dawn, mostly because the Meerkats haven't retaliated yet and who knows how what they might do.

Walter gave Jamie a dubious look. "Looks as though we're paired up." Oh yes, mouth-to-mouth on his girlfriend's roommate. That was... interesting.

Jamie returned the dubious look. "Won't Nadia be jealous?"

Peter looked at Jamie uncomfortably. "So how exactly is this supposed to work?"

Re: Rescue breathing

[identity profile] multi-madrox.livejournal.com 2006-05-30 03:42 pm (UTC)(link)
"One person, the person not breating, lies on the ground. The rescue-type-person checks to see if said person is breathing. You then open up the air way by gently lifting the neck, pinch the nostrils and then put your mouth over the other person's and give two breaths," Jamie explained. "I read the manual the other day."

Peter approached Cally with a nervous grin. "Err, right, d'you have a partner?"

Cally smiled back. "Nope," she said. "Do you?"

Peter looked around for a partner. And since they might be graded on use of the tongue, he wondered how exactly the tongue could be used to help someone breathe, but decided not to think about it for too long because it was kind of a weird thing to be thinking about.

[OOC: Whomever picks Peter, please note that I'll be extremely slow with replies until tonight.]

"Hey, Z," Peter said. "Um, yeah, sure. You are talking about yourself, right? Because if you're running a partner rental service or something, that would be weird."

Rescue Breathing...As in mouth to mouth resusitation...

Her stomach sinking, Seras made her way over to the designated area and tried her best to look invisible.

Cordelia didn't exactly look pleased with the idea of touching mouths with dirty strangers.

"Uh, hi," she said, approaching Seras. "I'm Cordelia."

[identity profile] union-jane.livejournal.com 2006-05-30 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm Seras. Er...d'you need a partner?"

Seras wasn't thrilled about this task, but having a girl as a partner would certainly reduce the squick factor.

"Sure!" Briar did look a bit disappointed though.
