First Aid, 5/30, Session 2

Elliot waited for the class to assemble and then began her lesson. A variety of handouts described the conditions she named.

"Hey. You guys did great in a tough situation last week. I was really impressed by the emergency management skills you showed."

"This week, we're getting into the nitty-gritty of emergencies affecting the respiratory system, which is how you breathe. You need to breathe so your body can convert oxygen in the air into the oxygen that fuels your body. The most common emergencies involving breathing are choking and near-drowning, but people may also stop breathing because of allergies or asthma. And then there's hyperventilation, which is usually psychosomatic. Not fun, but psychosomatic. About all you can do to stop that is try to take deep breaths."

"Today, I'm going to have you practice the Heimlich Maneuver and rescue breathing. Heimlich hurts like a bitch if you do it right -- seriously, you need to squeeze so hard you think you might break the person's ribs. So practice it on the danger-shop generated people in that room. If you know how to do it on an adult, try it on one of the babies or pregnant women."

"After that, pair up and go practice rescue breathing. You can make your own pairs for that. And, guys, there's nothing gay about it, even if you are afraid of boykissy."

"Oh, and one more thing? Last week, I didn't really do introductions, but I probably should. Tell us your name, age, any experience you have with first aid, and if there's anything weird about your physiology that I might want to know for this workshop. If you aren't comfortable saying it out loud, come see me after the session."

"And finally, the rules; one absence is totally fine. Two unexcused absences, and you get detention. So show up."

"That's it, guys. Go for it."

[OOC: OCD's up. Pretend I used the introductions thread instead of sign-in on purpose. We have 15 people in this class -- if anyone is hanging on the rescue breathing as of tomorrow morning, they'll get to work with either Elliot or one of the multipliers. Also? If your character has a truly major problem with the rescue breathing exercise, please let me know in the OOC thread.]

Jamie is there. He's staying from Izzy and Dawn, mostly because the Meerkats haven't retaliated yet and who knows how what they might do.

Walter gave Jamie a dubious look. "Looks as though we're paired up." Oh yes, mouth-to-mouth on his girlfriend's roommate. That was... interesting.

Jamie returned the dubious look. "Won't Nadia be jealous?"

Walter shook his head and spat his gum out in a trash can. "That depends. Will you enjoy it? Because I'm 99% certain that I won't."

"Me? Enjoy it? Hardly." Jamie said with a scoff. "Let's just get this over with. You can be the victim."

"Why should I be the victim?" Walter asked and shook his head. "You be the victim. Lie back and think of England."

"Think of England? I'm supposed to be unconscious, not in a coma," Jamie said as he laid down on the ground.

Walter made a face at Jamie and knelt by his side. "Don't insult the homeland of someone who is about to 'save' your life." Or at the very least engage in something one step removed from boykissy.

"Fine. I'll think of Germany," Jamie said with an eyeroll. "Can we get this over with please?"

Re: Rescue breathing

That earned a scowl. "Shut up and look unconscious."

"Fine."

Jamie shut his eyes and began to thing of Germany. Lederhosen. Horst Kohler. Schnitzel.

Deutschland, Deutschland über alles...

Right. Professional mode here because Walter's wasn't about to do something uncomfortably like kissing Nadia's roommate.

Head? Tilted.
Nose? Pinched.

And...

Walter firmly reminded himself that Jamie was going to die if he didn't get some air and pinched his nose closed to give him five full breaths of air.

There was absolutely no tongue involved and might have taken less than the ten seconds it was supposed to.

Jamie opened one eye. "Okay, hot stuff. I'm alive. Thanks."

Peter looked at Jamie uncomfortably. "So how exactly is this supposed to work?"

Re: Rescue breathing

[identity profile] multi-madrox.livejournal.com 2006-05-30 03:42 pm (UTC)(link)
"One person, the person not breating, lies on the ground. The rescue-type-person checks to see if said person is breathing. You then open up the air way by gently lifting the neck, pinch the nostrils and then put your mouth over the other person's and give two breaths," Jamie explained. "I read the manual the other day."

"Did you read the manual or eat it?" Peter asked with a grin.

Re: Rescue breathing

[identity profile] multi-madrox.livejournal.com 2006-05-30 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
"I made an idiot of myself the last time in workshop by suggesting butter for a burn," Jamie said with a little eye roll. "I wasn't going to let that happen again. Also? The manual tastes great with a little ranch salad dressing."

Re: Rescue breathing

[identity profile] once-a-king.livejournal.com 2006-05-30 04:29 pm (UTC)(link)
"I feel like I should be taking notes," Peter said, grinning. "There's a whole new world out there that I've not yet touched by avoiding literally devouring my texts."

"I think I may then leave that to those of you who are brave enough to attempt medical school," Peter said with a bow to Elliot.

Re: Rescue breathing

[identity profile] multi-madrox.livejournal.com 2006-05-30 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Jamie gave Elliot a weird look. "I fear you."

Re: Rescue breathing

[identity profile] multi-madrox.livejournal.com 2006-05-30 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
"Just another reason for the fear," Jamie said backing away slightly. "Not that I don't respect you? Just having the fear."
