First Aid, 5/30, Session 2

Elliot waited for the class to assemble and then began her lesson. A variety of handouts described the conditions she named.

"Hey. You guys did great in a tough situation last week. I was really impressed by the emergency management skills you showed."

"This week, we're getting into the nitty-gritty of emergencies affecting the respiratory system, which is how you breathe. You need to breathe so your body can convert oxygen in the air into the oxygen that fuels your body. The most common emergencies involving breathing are choking and near-drowning, but people may also stop breathing because of allergies or asthma. And then there's hyperventilation, which is usually psychosomatic. Not fun, but psychosomatic. About all you can do to stop that is try to take deep breaths."

"Today, I'm going to have you practice the Heimlich Maneuver and rescue breathing. Heimlich hurts like a bitch if you do it right -- seriously, you need to squeeze so hard you think you might break the person's ribs. So practice it on the danger-shop generated people in that room. If you know how to do it on an adult, try it on one of the babies or pregnant women."

"After that, pair up and go practice rescue breathing. You can make your own pairs for that. And, guys, there's nothing gay about it, even if you are afraid of boykissy."

"Oh, and one more thing? Last week, I didn't really do introductions, but I probably should. Tell us your name, age, any experience you have with first aid, and if there's anything weird about your physiology that I might want to know for this workshop. If you aren't comfortable saying it out loud, come see me after the session."

"And finally, the rules; one absence is totally fine. Two unexcused absences, and you get detention. So show up."

"That's it, guys. Go for it."

[OOC: OCD's up. Pretend I used the introductions thread instead of sign-in on purpose. We have 15 people in this class -- if anyone is hanging on the rescue breathing as of tomorrow morning, they'll get to work with either Elliot or one of the multipliers. Also? If your character has a truly major problem with the rescue breathing exercise, please let me know in the OOC thread.]

"I'm Dawn, I'm 16, and I'm from Sunnydale, California. I've tied some bandages and wrapped some sprains, but nothing bigger than that." She paused, thinking about blood running down her arms and the fact that it might be possible to unmake her. "Um, no. Perfectly normal human."

"I'm Isabel and I'm 17. I've haven't had much experience with first aid. Usually my brother is able to heal everything so it hasn't been an issue. But I'm here and he's in Roswell so..." she shrugged. "Also, I'm an alien human hybrid."

"My name's Walter Dornez. I'm 14, from WWII England. I have the sort of first aid experience you get during a war when you aren't a medic - put pressure on a wound, don't move people with spinal injuries, get a doctor right quick.

"My metabolism, I am told, is a lot faster than normal, which make sense because I'm a lot faster than normal, too. When you check my pulse, don't be surprised by it."

"Hullo. My name's Seras Victoria. I'm 15 and a normal human. I can do the basic stuff they teach you in school or that's just common sense. Disinfecting cuts and putting on bandages and all that. Apart from that, I've not got much experience."

Seras cleared her throat.

Prolonged hospital stays and physical therapy didn't count as first aid, right. Not when *you're* the patient, right?

Jamie approached a gentleman who was doing the internation sign of "I'm choking dammit! Do something!" and wrapped his arms around his waist, putting his fist between the guy's navel and ribcage.

After doing a couple of upward thrusts and entire twinkie shot out of the guys mouth and hit the wall.

Re: Heimlich time.

[identity profile] lilpunkinbelly.livejournal.com 2006-05-30 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Dawn walked by the well-dressed curly-haired redheaded figure with the strangely lopsided rear end who was choking on a piece of sushi to help the scraggly-haired filthy guy who smelled a bit like feet and was choking on his own vomit.

A few upward thrusts later, and the homeless guy was fine.

Re: Heimlich time.

[identity profile] peter--parker.livejournal.com 2006-05-30 03:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Peter approached a man who seemed to be trying to call out "Heimlich Maneuver!" Peter got into position and gave a few upward thrusts. He was trying to find the right balance between "hard enough to break a rib" and "gentle enough not to crush the poor guy with superstrength," but was ending up closer to "hugging uncomfortably hard."

Peter finally decided that he just had to use more strength than he was really comfortable with and added some force to his thrusts. The man said "Hoocha" with each thrust and a large piece of lobster came out.

Re: Heimlich time.

[identity profile] once-a-king.livejournal.com 2006-05-30 03:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Peter found an older gentlemen who was staggering about on which to practice. He wrapped his arms around his waist and tried the upward thrust. Perhaps a bit too upward because he heard something crack in the man's chest. Apologizing profusely, he readjusted his grip and tried again. This time nothing broke and a few thrusts later a large piece of cheese flew out of the man's mouth.

Re: Heimlich time.

[identity profile] walter-n-wires.livejournal.com 2006-05-30 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Walter watched the generated figures staggering, choking, pointing at their throats, and generally doing a convincing job of "I'm going to die!"

He picked an incredibly tall woman and tried to figure out how to give her the heimlich when her rib cage was about face height on him and finally settled for tripping her and performing the maneuver after she went sprawling.

It took a few thrusts to get that piece of hot dog out. Did no one understand the reason for chewing?

Isabel found a baby that was unresponsive and turning blue. She picked him up, held him on her lap and applied the Heimlich Manuever as described by the manual. She grinned when a grape popped out of the baby's mouth and he started to cry. "Okay, where's the mother? How do I stop the crying?"

Re: Heimlich time.

[identity profile] sogothcally.livejournal.com 2006-05-30 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Cally found a man close to her height who appeared to be turning blue.

She struggled with delivering the manuever. It started out as more of a gesture. Eventually, she got it right and the bit of food leapt from the man's mouth.

Cally then scolded him for not chewing properly.

Peter walked over after the workshop ended. "Dr Reid? Hi, sorry about not saying more earlier. The fact that I'm different and can do stuff is generally known, but I try to keep the specifics quiet."

Peter didn't mention the fact that he was also generally wary of telling doctors anything. He was pretty sure Elliot wasn't the mad scientist type, after all.
