First Aid, 5/30, Session 2

Elliot waited for the class to assemble and then began her lesson. A variety of handouts described the conditions she named.

"Hey. You guys did great in a tough situation last week. I was really impressed by the emergency management skills you showed."

"This week, we're getting into the nitty-gritty of emergencies affecting the respiratory system, which is how you breathe. You need to breathe so your body can convert oxygen in the air into the oxygen that fuels your body. The most common emergencies involving breathing are choking and near-drowning, but people may also stop breathing because of allergies or asthma. And then there's hyperventilation, which is usually psychosomatic. Not fun, but psychosomatic. About all you can do to stop that is try to take deep breaths."

"Today, I'm going to have you practice the Heimlich Maneuver and rescue breathing. Heimlich hurts like a bitch if you do it right -- seriously, you need to squeeze so hard you think you might break the person's ribs. So practice it on the danger-shop generated people in that room. If you know how to do it on an adult, try it on one of the babies or pregnant women."

"After that, pair up and go practice rescue breathing. You can make your own pairs for that. And, guys, there's nothing gay about it, even if you are afraid of boykissy."

"Oh, and one more thing? Last week, I didn't really do introductions, but I probably should. Tell us your name, age, any experience you have with first aid, and if there's anything weird about your physiology that I might want to know for this workshop. If you aren't comfortable saying it out loud, come see me after the session."

"And finally, the rules; one absence is totally fine. Two unexcused absences, and you get detention. So show up."

"That's it, guys. Go for it."

[OOC: OCD's up. Pretend I used the introductions thread instead of sign-in on purpose. We have 15 people in this class -- if anyone is hanging on the rescue breathing as of tomorrow morning, they'll get to work with either Elliot or one of the multipliers. Also? If your character has a truly major problem with the rescue breathing exercise, please let me know in the OOC thread.]

"...'kay," he agreed, staring at her. "Won't hurt her. Scout's honor."

Parker grinned. "Don't worry. I'll be asking her what her intentions toward you are, as well. If she's toying with you for her own amusement-- not that Isabel is capable of that-- I'll find you another nice alien girl to date. They're not in short supply around here."

"Well, I only want the one," he told her. "And I'll treat her like a princess, like she deserves. So no worries. Plus it's only one date, dude. I have no idea what's happening."

"Don't call me dude. That's a Bridgey thing." Parker cocked her head. "Just... be nice? I know you are, just-- Isabel's not shy, but she's really cautious. Don't make her sorry she even said yes to the date. That's all I ask."

"Do you seriously think I want to blow my chance on this?" Greg asked. "I'll be good. Promise."

Parker gave him a bright grin. "Goooooood Greggie. We should get you a cookie."

"Don't need a cookie," Greg said with a doofy smile. "What I've got is enough. Are we done?"

Parker snickered. "You're finished, that's for sure. Yeah, we're done."

Greg rolled his eyes at her retreating back.

Funny how Isabel just happened to wander by then. "Hi! Nice radio broadcast."

"Hi!" he replied, grinning. "Thanks. And I only said hi to you once this time."

"Well I waved at the radio. I hope that makes you happy." Isabel tilted her head and looked at him. "So," she said slowly. "You promised me a hint?"

"Hmm...wear something comfortable," Greg said thoughtfully. "That you won't mind getting dirty, just in case."

"Okay, I can work with that," she smiled. "Is there a time? And anything special I need to bring?"

"Only special thing you need to bring is yourself, and I'll pick you up at seven," Greg told her.

Isabel ducked her head, trying to hide the fact that her face was suddenly red. "I'll be waiting." Since sudden subject changes are always a good way to overcome embarassment she aske, "So what have you been up to? Besides radio?"

"I met Peter's monkey yesterday," he said with a shrug. "It cried at me."

"Peter has a monkey? That's new," she said. "But given the weird critters people have as pets around here? Not entirely unbelievable. Why was it crying?"

"Well, it's a digital monkey," Greg explained. "And we don't know, but it's very emo. Saddest monkey ever."

"Oh, one of those little interactive things?" Isabel laughed, "It's emo? That's horrible. Maybe it needs a little monkey friend. It could be lonely."

"That's possible," Greg mused. "Or maybe we should make something whimsical for it to wear. A hat, perhaps."

"A hat would be good. Or pants even," she nodded. "There's only one problem, I'm not particularly skilled at hat or pants making."

"I'm not sure how to make tiny pants either," Greg said worriedly. "But a hat I can do. Oooh. Maybe a little bitty wig so that it can have really good hair."

"Perhaps blue hair?" Isabel suggested with a grin. "Really good blue hair?"

"Hmm, if only I knew someone who could turn people's hair blue," he said, tapping his chin.
