Advanced Criminal Justice, Class 26, Period 1, 04.13.06

[OOC: And once again, I interact little. But there's a good reason for it this time! I'm here, Obi-Wan's here, we're all here, let's party. Class Info Post.]

The Tick was sitting behind his desk with a smile on his face. Even Lockheed seemed slightly interested in what was going on today. "Hello, students! Sorry I wasn't here on Tuesday. I was fighting that most fearsome of all foes, the Uncommon Cold! Thank you, Rory, for covering for me at the last minute."

"Today, we have a special guest lecturer who is here to tell us about another view of Justice that we've had some exposure to. Please welcome Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi!"

He's frowning a whole lot when the Jedi brings up the Force and then stands up to ask a question. "You worship this Force?"

Re: Q&A [Class 26]

Obi-Wan is puzzled by amount of hostility he senses in the boy. "No," he says slowly. "Worship would be the wrong word. The Force simply is. It's an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us, penetrates us, and binds the galaxy together. Some individuals are more sensitive to that energy than others. A Jedi learns to listen to that sensitivity, to align oneself in harmony with it, and to use it as a tool."

He's not sure why the boy is so upset, but perhaps he's stepped on some religious taboo.

"But only a Jedi is given the knowledge to yield this power?" He asks and wonders if the Jedi are like the Alterans.

Parker's a good friend. She'll act as distraction to a Jedi Master any time.

"Master Obi-Wan? I'm Parker, and welcome to Earth. First, I'm really glad you're feeling well enough to be here." Brilliant smile. "Second, do you mind explaining how the lack of personal possessions helps a Jedi channel the Force? I'm afraid I don't understand." She pouted a litle. "Anakin mentioned a robot he built that he had to leave behind...."

Re: Q&A [Class 26]

[identity profile] master2-whiners.livejournal.com 2006-04-13 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Obi-Wan returns her smile warmly. "Thank you, Miss Parker, it's good to be back."

"The life of a Jedi is one of personal sacrifice. We pursue nothing for ourselves - not power, not material possessions, not personal attachments. It allows us to use our abilities with as little bias and much purely rational judgement as possible. It reminds us that our purpose is to serve, not to seek for our own gain."

Re: Q&A [Class 26]

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2006-04-13 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)
"Isn't that kind of impossible? I mean, if you weren't personally attached to the universe, you wouldn't care if people were getting along," Parker pointed out. "Of course, I'd have a hard time giving up my shoes, so I'm the wrong person to ask, probably." She grinned. "And why do the robes as personal fashion statement have to be so... conservative?"

"Last semester Anakin was a member of the fencing club. What kind of sword training do the Jedi usually have?"

Re: Q&A [Class 26]

[identity profile] master2-whiners.livejournal.com 2006-04-13 05:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"A Jedi's primary weapon is his lightsaber. Unfortuanately, I can't show you mine today, as it's in the school's weapons lock-up, but it's an energy sword. It's not so clumsy or random as a blaster; it's a civilized weapon that calls for a great deal of skill, so Jedi train from a very young age to use it."

He stops for a moment to answer Bridge (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomhigh/807242.html?thread=37777738#t37777738), then continues.

"There are a variety of forms of lightsaber fighting - some more aggressive, some more defensive, some more acrobatic, and others very simple in style. Jedi are not just found among the humoid species in our galaxy, so different beings use different forms according to their body's strengths and weaknesses."

"What would be your favorite strategy when dealing with arguing factions?" Then, after absolutely not winking at Anakin, she asked, "and what would you feel have been your most challenging negotiations?"

Ah, the power of war stories.

Re: Q&A [Class 26]

[identity profile] master2-whiners.livejournal.com 2006-04-13 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, there was always one who liked to ask for story time. He asked, "you have an interest in political negotiations, yourself?"

"In general, I find it's most useful to keep all parties talking. Of course the difficulty there is getting the factions to talk to each other rather than at each other. But as long as they're willing to be at the table, there's still hope. It's when those involved stop talking that things turn ugly."

"Well, the most challenging part of any negotiation can be keeping your temper when matters are at their worst," Obi-Wan said. He thought for a minute. "And sometimes the challenge can be found in the small details. Once, Anakin and I were involved in a fairly simple diplomatic exchange. It was a simple formality - witnessing the formal investiture of the heir to a marriage the Jedi had arranged some few years prior, putting an end to a trade dispute that had disrupted grain deliveries for several systems around. There was a ceremony, the child was declared officially the heir to the new joint shipping organization, and a few days of banqueting were to follow."

He cleared his throat. "Except we discovered the hard way that Anakin was very allergic to Delthi food. Very allergic." He cleared his throat again. "And I think for his sake, that's about all of that story I'll tell. But the point is that although our official function was easy, we were nevertheless both miserable and struggling during our three days there - simply because of so small a thing as the food. So, you never know what your challenge in any negotiation is really going to be."

Bridge raises his hand. And then, without actually waiting to be called on.

"Is it possible to *see* the Force?" he asks, curiously.

Re: Q&A [Class 26]

[identity profile] master2-whiners.livejournal.com 2006-04-13 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
"Not directly. You feel it around you, moving through you - but you can see its effects."

With a wave of his hand, Bridge's pen rises off the desk and hovers.

Logan arrived late and with bits of creamed corn still in his hair.

He raised his hand. "Is it true that Jedi are celibate?"

Rory bit her lip and tried very, very hard to keep her face from showing any emotion.

Re: Q&A [Class 26]

[identity profile] master2-whiners.livejournal.com 2006-04-13 06:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Obi-Wan looked nonplussed by the corn - and the question - though he raises an internal eyebrow. He heard Anakin choking a little, and felt a small tremor in Rory's emotions (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomhigh/807242.html?thread=37787722#t37787722), but assumed they were simply embarassed about discussing sex in class. Although really, he knew his own talk with Anakin had been somewhat awkward, but it couldn't have been that bad.

"Yes, it's true Jedi don't form romantic attachments, just as we forswear material attachments. The Jedi adhere to a code:
There is no emotion; there is peace.
There is no ignorance; there is knowledge.
There is no passion; there is serenity.
There is no death; there is only the Force.

Aeryn hasn't heard a lot about any of this, actually. "Is there some sort of ranking, a chain of command that you have to follow?" she asks. She can assume, but she's curious what it actually is and how far it goes. "Who makes the decisions of when you have to intervene?"

Re: Q&A [Class 26]

[identity profile] master2-whiners.livejournal.com 2006-04-14 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
"Not in the militaristic sense that you mean, but there are three basic rankings in the order. Padawans," and here he nodded at Anakin, "are Jedi-in-training, assigned to a Knight who teaches them, guides them in their path. A Knight is the most common ranking - one who has passed the four Trials to become a Jedi. A Knight who has successfully trained a Padawan, or who has grown greatly in wisdom and discipline and faces the Trials again, becomes a Master. Finally there are twelve Masters who sit on the Jedi Council, the governing body of our order. They advise the Senate, decide where Jedi are needed throughout the galaxy, and preside over promotions within the order. But indivdiual Jedi do operate with a certain amount of autonomy - it's why we train for so long and face the Trials that we do, so that we can trust our instincts, trust in the Force, and apply our judgement accordingly."

Then caught Obi-Wan's eye and snickered. This wasn't the first time this question had been asked.

Go, Jaye!

Parker's internal grin ratchets up a notch, and she perches her chin on her hand to listen to this answer with her full attention.

Jedi don't blush. Really. But Obi-Wan is still grateful for his beard. He scratches at it lightly. "Um. Yes, well, why do you think the Jedi took me in? Wouldn't've bothered with me, otherwise." He grins, blue eyes twinkling.
