As much as Maeve didn't want to admit that she was nervous, she really was. This was big. It was a new school, a new country, a second chance that she really didn't want to screw up.

She seemed to be the first one here- at least the glittery sign told her she was in the right place, and she was a little annoyed by it on principle- so she found a seat, piled her bags around her, and pulled out a book to read while she waited.

While she looked pretty engrossed in it, anytime she saw someone pass by her eyes flicked up like she was expecting them to come sit nearby.

The last thing he remembered was was falling from the cliff, his brother and his... his friend above him, Jiang Cheng scowling furiously and Lan Zhan watching in horror as he fell. He didn't feel an impact, but he was no longer falling. He was no longer anything. He didn't know how long he was there.

Then the nothingness dropped away and he was falling again. He braced himself for a terrible landing on the rocks below, but instead he landed on his back with no more force than if he'd fallen off his chair.

Chenqing landed next to him. The black flute bounced once before settling near his hand, its red tassel splayed out on the floor.

Wei Wuxian lay there for a moment, to see if the floor would drop away and send him falling again, but when it did not, he picked up his flute and pulled himself to his feet. He brushed off his black and red robes and looked around at the scene where he'd landed.

All right, this was going to be how this started?

Maeve looked up from her book, to him, and then up at the ceiling, and wondered if maybe this was like some TikTok prank thing?

"Hey," she said, and flipped a page.

"Hi." All right. This didn't feel like any reincarnation that he'd heard of, but it also didn't feel like any hell he'd heard of. He'd read a book at Cloud Recesses about doorways to other worlds, but it had been entirely theoretical. "Ah, I'm sorry to bother you, but where are we?"

Well, someone was a show-off. Teleportation was risky as all hell, and to do it just to make an entrance and then boff the landing? Arabella gave Wei Wuxian judgy eyes over the top of her phone as she tapped out a play-by-play to Catalina of what had just happened.

She wondered how he'd kept his clothes, though.

Miles waved at the guy with a long hair. "Hi! I'm Miles," he said cheerfully. "Going to this school too, huh?"

Which was totally obvious but hey, Miles was just trying to make conversation.

Wei Wuxian really didn't like not knowing things. "School, yes," he said, nodding his head, then suddenly he was stricken with a horrible thought. What if this was his hell - a school like Cloud Recesses but with no friends and no fun. "Ah, do you know if alcohol's permitted at this school?" The sudden horror was visible on his face.

Okay, yeah, it was sort of hard to play it entirely cool when someone just fell out of the nowhere.

"Okay, someone please tell me someone else saw that," he demanded, after a moment of staring, because subtly was not usually his strong suit, but no one seemed hurt, so now he was just worried about his brain.

"It's just a teleport," Arabella scoffed, like they happened all the time and were not, in fact, something she'd only previously seen in person once in her entire life.

"What, people don't travel like that where you come from?" Wei Wuxian asked, He spun his flute in his fingers, pretending like he didn't really want to know the answer.

Alright, Troy. You got this. This wasn't exactly Riverside High anymore, but you were cool, you were hot, and it was high school, so that was pretty much all that mattered, right? You were going to totally crush this, just like you totally crushed not crushing that keg flip...

So after a little pep talk in his head, Troy finally found his way to the right place, after...a few misfires, but he was pretty sure that a glittering sign like that would not just...lie to him like he was pretty sure that map did about half a dozen times.

Pretty quiet so far, it seems, as he gave his coolest look around the room, cocked his chin up in greeting at anyone drawn in by his immediate charm and presence and impressive letter jacket, before tossing his bag down by one of the chairs in a fashion that was cool, then slinging himself into a seat and slouching comfortably, coolly, into it, while passing glance around to start sizing everyone up a little, also in a very cool way.

Maeve watched him over the pages of her book, actually finding that he reminded her a lot of Jackson, but like if Jackson was trying.

She did give him a nod that was like a hello, though.

Trying? Troy T-Bone Barnes? He didn't know the meaning of the word.

And, actually, he kind of didn't, it all came pretty natural to him back home, all he pretty much had to do was pick up a football and...

Damn. Should he have brought a football? He probably should have brought a football.

But the girl who'd been there and nodded back was cute, though. So his chin quirked up again and he asked, "Fandom High transfer?"

Seriously, if he was in the wrong place again, he was going to be so mad. Or at least mildly irritated and increasingly confused.

There was... something about this kid. Something both familiar and not familiar. Miles felt like somehow he both knew and did not know this kid.

This is what happens when a PB is an inspiration for another character.

"Hi! I'm Miles," he said cheerfully and pointed at a seat next to Troy. "This seat taken?"

Which was weird, because Troy was thinking pretty much the exact same thing about this kid, to a point where he was tempted to lift his hand to do that trick he learned to test if things were a mirror ever since that one time he almost picked a fight with his own reflection in the bathroom at a party once.

Then he spoke, and so that took care of that question.

"Nah, man," he said, shifting a little to pull in some of his cool sprawl for the other guy. "It's all yours." And then the requisite lift of his chin as he offered, "Troy."

The Portalocity Lounge was not that far from the main drop off point near the street. And that's where Miles was having a long conversation with someone in a cop car. Finally Miles got out pulling his suitcase along with him, glad to be out of the environment.

Only for him to stop dead in his tracks when the police siren let out a loud "Whoop" followed by voice bellowing through the PA.

"You gotta say I love you back!"

Miles spun around in horror. "Dad are you serious?!"

"I want to hear it!"

"You want to hear-"

"I love you, Dad!"

"You're dropping me off at-"

"I love you, Dad!"

"Look at this place!"

"Dad, I love you."

Miles stood there and fumed. Finally he sighed and said it. "Dad, I love you."

"That's a copy. Tie your shoes, please."

Miles turned around and marched into the lounge, defiantly not tying his shoes.

Man, I hope no one heard that.

"Hi! This is going to Fandom High?" He asked cheerfully.

"As per the sign," Maeve said, almost managing not to look amused as she hitched a thumb towards the glitter.

Arabella had, for the first time in her life, matching luggage, and it was new, and it wasn't even from Target. It had been, along with her shiny new laptop, a "going away to school" present from her brother-in-law, although she suspected Bug of having had some input in the laptop. It was way too souped up for distance learning. She was every inch the House scion off to boarding school...except for the part where she was dragging her own stuff around instead of having a minion to do it for her, and she was dressed in a tank top and basketball shorts because early morning flights were bad enough without dressing up for them. Whatever.

After checking the sign to make sure she was in the right place, Arabella gave everyone in the waiting area a little wave and a, "Hi, how's it going?" before picking out a seat and taking out her phone to resume her text argument with Catalina about whether she still had to take online geometry if she was taking an economics class.

Catalina wasn't answering, of course, because Catalina had probably gone back to bed after they'd dropped Arabella off at the airport, and Catalina was now in a different time zone.

This was going to take some getting used to.

That was about the entry Maeve had expected from people, texts and all, so that earned a "Hey," from her.

And maybe Maeve was watching her a little like she was trying to suss her out. She seemed normal enough?

Troy didn't really say anything from where he was sitting, but he definitely quirked an eyebrow as he scoped the girl out a little. Things definitely looked promising as far as hotties went for this school so far.

And he could think that with confidence now that he knew this actually was the right place.

There was a guy asleep in the corner, head propped against the wall, backpack at his feet and silver flask still clutched loosely in one hand.

Maybe he was homeless?

At some point Maeve got up to find the bathroom, and on the way back she stopped just to check, "You okay?"

Miles looked at the guy and immediately felt bad for him. So he took out a few dollars and put it in the abandoned coffee cup near the homeless guy.

"Here, it's not much but it should get you something to eat."
