BWI Airport Portalocity Lounge- Saturday morning

As much as Maeve didn't want to admit that she was nervous, she really was. This was big. It was a new school, a new country, a second chance that she really didn't want to screw up.

She seemed to be the first one here- at least the glittery sign told her she was in the right place, and she was a little annoyed by it on principle- so she found a seat, piled her bags around her, and pulled out a book to read while she waited.

While she looked pretty engrossed in it, anytime she saw someone pass by her eyes flicked up like she was expecting them to come sit nearby.

There was a guy asleep in the corner, head propped against the wall, backpack at his feet and silver flask still clutched loosely in one hand.

Maybe he was homeless?

Booker came awake, muttering something that was incomprehensible only partially because it was in French, and then said in English, "What, yeah, I'm fine."

Oh, Jesus. The students were here. He very quickly put the flask away and sat up, trying to look like a responsible adult and probably failing.

"Uh, yeah, I'm just, uh..." Way to make a great first impression on your possible students, le Livre.

"Long flight," he finally settled on, as if the kid hadn't seen the flask.

Booker deserved this judgment, and he knew it. "I'm good," he said. "But did you see a Starbucks around here or something?" He should probably get coffee.

Like a lot of coffee.

He already regretted everything, so he might as well have more regrets and be awake. "Thanks, kid," he told the kid. "You're a helper."

Miles looked at the guy and immediately felt bad for him. So he took out a few dollars and put it in the abandoned coffee cup near the homeless guy.

"Here, it's not much but it should get you something to eat."

Fuck his entire life.

"I'm not homeless, kid, keep your money." He was just having a bad day. Week. Month.

Century.

"Oh, crap!" he said apologetically. "I'm sorry! I just thought-"

Yep. No way to get out of this one.

"Yeah, I'm sorry man. Are you going to this school? Because no offense you look-"

Do not say old.

"-like someone who already graduated."

Not any better.

Booker sighed. "Yes. I'm going to the school." The kid might as well learn to be disappointed in authority figures sooner rather than later, but Booker still found himself trotting out the lame excuse he'd used on the girl. "It was a long flight."

"Oh, Right. Okay, then," Miles said feeling awkward. "I'm Miles. It was nice to meet you."

"Nice to meet you, Miles," Booker said.

God, please let none of these kids be taking French.
