The Library

[janet_fraiser]

Janet unlocked the library and walked in, setting her laptop down warily behind the desk and trying not to think about Hathor the last time she was in here. She took a drink from her extra-large mug of coffee and started working.

ETA: She popped out a moment later and stuck a note up on the door: "New teachers need to check out the Rules of Conduct and fill out a library card application in blue or black ink, damn it. Please come inside for a form. Thank you."

Elizabeth skids into the library, beaming and grabs Janet.

"I actually won!"

Janet stands up and leans over the desk to hug Elizabeth. "That's great!" she exclaims. "Was there any doubt, though? You're the best choice."

She hugs Janet back. "The best choice in this place means nothing, and you know it."

Elizabeth giddily sits down on the desk. "Oh wow."

"Hah," says Janet, letting go and crossing her arms to give Liz a glare. "Obviously it means something if you can be out for two weeks with the mumps and still get voted in."

She ducks slightly under the glare. "I spoke well enough at the open-mic night... I guess people were actually listening," she says, shrugging.

"See?" Janet hugs her again. "That's because you're amazing at what you do."

She leans against Janet. "Thanks, hon. Now I've just got to get my mind back into student politics."

Janet touches Liz's hair quickly, then reminds herself she's supposed to be working and sits back down. "You'll get the hang of it in no time," she says. "Just remember: Don't vote to get rid of the student body's coffee, and you'll be fine."

Liz laughs. "I think I can safely say that as long as I'm on the council, the coffee is here to stay! That's one universal political agreement, I think."

Sam walks quickly into the library and puts her toolbox down on the floor. "Janet, did you hear about Li..." She stops when she sees Liz, and grabs the other girl into a tight hug.

Today is so totally the best day ever.

Liz hugs Sam back. "I still can't believe it," she laughs.

"Why not? You were obviously the best person for the job, even with the mumps." Sam's still grinning.

Elizabeth giggles slightly. "Doesn't necessarily mean that you'd get elected... have you seen some of our public officials? Would you have considered Kinsey the best man for the job?"

"Well, you had one of the most determined campaign managers on the planet or any other one, too."

Sam gives a theatrical shudder at the name Kinsey. "I wouldn't have considered Kinsey the best man for any job, let alone the one he managed to lie, cheat, and steal his way into."

"Oh, that's a point... have either of you seen Parker since she went to the clinic last night?" Elizabeth frowns. "I really hope it wasn't her appendix..."

She gives a small, tight smile. "My point exactly."

Sam shook her head, blushing slightly. "I, um, didn't even notice she'd left, actually."

Elizabeth tried valiently not to snicker. "Did you notice when Janet and I left?"

Sam lowered her head and mumbled. "Eventually..."

Janet giggled.

Janet tries not to make gagging noises. "Don't even get me started about that loathsome creep."

She laughs, and turns to Parker. "Thank you... for everything. I couldn't... possibly even wouldn't have done it without you!
