Luau: The Main Campfire: Friday Evening

The irony of having a Hawaiian luau while in Greece probably hadn't escaped anyone.  But given that the majority of the students probably couldn't pinpoint Hawaii on the map, it didn't seem like that was enough of a reason to cancel what had become a summer tradition.

So in the early evening, the main campfire was transformed into a party place with coconuts, grass skirts, and leis for everyone.  A pig was slowly roasting over the fire, and a huge moddable buffet spread out to the flagpole.

A dance floor was set up, and Hawaiian music was playing, but there was also plenty of grass spread with blankets for the less-rhythm-inclined.

[OOC:  YAAAAAY LUAU!  Students, teachers, and townies all welcome!]

Ned had absolutely no idea why he was there but he was and he was trying not to look too nervous about the crowd. He tucked his hands tightly into his pockets and took a seat in the sand, trying to look relaxed but mostly just looking restless.

Digby was sitting next to him, looking far more relaxed with the situation.

"Ned," Worf said acknowledging his cabinmate. "I see you have joined the festivities."

Apparently Klingons are not only warriors but masters of obvious statements.

"Yep, I'm here," Ned said, nodding. "You are too. This your first...luau?"

"Yes, I am here," he said looking around stiffly. "It seemed the... social thing to do. And yes this is my first luau."

...

"Is this your first luau as well?"

"Oh yeah, definitely," Ned said, nodding slowly. "I think we're doing pretty well of blending in."

He wasn't.

"All I need now is a fanny pack and a straw hat."

Ned had a lot to learn.

Worf raised an eyebrow at that. "Is that a required part of this ritual?" Worf asked. "I wasn't aware of that. Nor was I aware an animal would be sacrificed for the event or I would have come earlier to see it."

"Maybe?" Ned had no idea. "You wanted to see them kill the food?"

Luke glanced over, realized he didn't recognize him, and gave the new guy a welcoming smile. "You okay?"

Ned startled out of his reverie and located the sound of the voice before giving a half smile.

"Sure," he said, nodding. "I'm enjoying the view."

And he motioned to the roasting pig for lack of anything else to motion to.

"That's not a student," Luke said helpfully, "in case you were worried."

Well, he hadn't been.

"Please tell me that hasn't happened before," Ned asked in a completely calm voice. He was flailing on the inside. "People only give disclaimers when things have happened before."

"Oh, not at all," Luke said quickly. "The school is strange, but it's drawn the line at public sacrifices."

"Oh, yay," Ned said with false enthusiasm. "I'm comforted now. Or, you know, not as freaked out as I just was."

"You look like a Cat in a room full of Gale Forcers," he said with a faint smile as he settled not far.

He didn't look to hot himself, still a bit exhausted from everything... but he was better.

"I look like a cat?" Ned repeated, frowning. "I don't have whiskers. Or a tail."

God, he hoped he didn't. Had a gremlin bitten him when he'd been staring off in the distance?

[identity profile] new-to-liirness.livejournal.com 2008-05-16 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
"Actually, I said a Cat," he pointed out. "And mostly just in the part where you look sort of nervous. No whiskers. And no tail I can see."

Re: The Campfire

[identity profile] death-and-pies.livejournal.com 2008-05-16 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
"Sort of nervous," Ned repeated, not contradicting that but not admitting it either. "It's nice to know I haven't grown a tail overnight."

Re: The Campfire

[identity profile] new-to-liirness.livejournal.com 2008-05-16 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
"I did once," he said.

Then he thought over his words.

"Well, not really overnight. And it was more turning into a kitten than anything else. So there you go. That sort of thing does happen around here, though it's not permanent at least."

Beat.

"You'dve noticed the tail, probably."

It was nice that Ned now had to add more things to his mental list of things that were going to drive him insane.

"Not permanent, that's good," Ned said weakly, surreptitiously sneaking a glance behind him. Just checking. "I think I'd like to stay myself. I'm not much for tails that suddenly appear."

"Hiii, Digby!" Kaylee said, wandering over to pet the dog. She'd get to Ned in a second. "How're you tonight?"

Re: The Campfire

[identity profile] death-and-pies.livejournal.com 2008-05-16 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Digby hopped up from where he'd been sprawling and eagerly went over to rub against Kaylee's legs.

[identity profile] weefeetbigboots.livejournal.com 2008-05-16 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
She scritched his ears. "Are you all nervous too, or is that just Ned? He looks awful jumpy for a party."

Re: The Campfire

[identity profile] death-and-pies.livejournal.com 2008-05-16 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Digby spared a glance behind him at said jumpy person before he barked happily and leaned into Kaylee's hand.

"I'm not jumpy," Ned said even though he was.

"You look like you're worried someone's gonna try to roast you," she replied, smiling.

[identity profile] death-and-pies.livejournal.com 2008-05-16 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well, they might," Ned said, looking around. "I mean. Maybe."
