Luau: The Main Campfire: Friday Evening

The irony of having a Hawaiian luau while in Greece probably hadn't escaped anyone.  But given that the majority of the students probably couldn't pinpoint Hawaii on the map, it didn't seem like that was enough of a reason to cancel what had become a summer tradition.

So in the early evening, the main campfire was transformed into a party place with coconuts, grass skirts, and leis for everyone.  A pig was slowly roasting over the fire, and a huge moddable buffet spread out to the flagpole.

A dance floor was set up, and Hawaiian music was playing, but there was also plenty of grass spread with blankets for the less-rhythm-inclined.

[OOC:  YAAAAAY LUAU!  Students, teachers, and townies all welcome!]

"Oh." Ned hadn't been homeless, not in the way he thought Liir was speaking of, but he'd sure felt like it. Not that he was going to share. "What's an Emerald City?"

"It's a city at the center of Oz, which is where I'm from," he said. "It's not really an 'an' so much as a 'the' since there's only one. City, I mean."

"Oz," Ned repeated. "Space?"

He shook his head.

"A faerie country situated between four deserts."

"Right." Not space. Still no place he'd ever heard of. "Earth?"

He shuddered.

Then he looked as if he was a bit guilty about doing that before shaking his head.

"Right." Ned sighed and decided he was just never going to figure this place out. "You don't like Earth?"

"The girl I met from there was less than impressive. She also accidentally murdered my mother."

If he kept saying it, it wouldn't be so terribly hard to say.

"Oh." Ned had absolutely no idea what to say in response to that. None. "Oh."

He shrugged.

"And her dog wouldn't stop misbehaving."

He looked down at Digby.

"Not a proper dog like... he is yours, isn't he?"

Ned blinked at the segue, still trying to gather his scattered thoughts away from the dark places they'd been sent to.

It wasn't working too well.

"Yeah." That was about the best he could do with words.

Ned crossed his arms, tucking them tightly against him and hunched his shoulders. It was almost automatic, to do that. He'd done it so often.

He reached out a hand for Digby to sniff.

"He looks like a good dog," he said, realizing he'd done something to make the other boy uncomfortable but not really sure what.

Digby sniffed the person he didn't recognize for a moment before nudging against the offered hand.

"He is," Ned said, chancing a look at Digby. He could do that. That was all right.

Except it wasn't and he ended up staring at the sand.

Liir took that as an okay and moved to pet his head. To be honest, Liir adored dogs and could have been just as happy playing with Digby all night as talking. But he remembered to be polite and looked up.

"Something the matter?"

"Nope," Ned said, keeping his answers short and simple. That was easy. Digby leaned into the hand petting him and wagged his tail.

Liir just nodded to that and continued to lavish affection on the dog.
