Luau: The Main Campfire: Friday Evening

The irony of having a Hawaiian luau while in Greece probably hadn't escaped anyone. But given that the majority of the students probably couldn't pinpoint Hawaii on the map, it didn't seem like that was enough of a reason to cancel what had become a summer tradition.

So in the early evening, the main campfire was transformed into a party place with coconuts, grass skirts, and leis for everyone. A pig was slowly roasting over the fire, and a huge ~~moddable~~ buffet spread out to the flagpole.

A dance floor was set up, and Hawaiian music was playing, but there was also plenty of grass spread with blankets for the less-rhythm-inclined.

"Yep, I'm here," Ned said, nodding. "You are too. This your first...luau?"

"Yes, I am here," he said looking around stiffly. "It seemed the... social thing to do. And yes this is my first luau."

...

"Is this your first luau as well?"

"Oh yeah, definitely," Ned said, nodding slowly. "I think we're doing pretty well of blending in."

He wasn't.

"All I need now is a fanny pack and a straw hat."

Ned had a lot to learn.

Worf raised an eyebrow at that. "Is that a required part of this ritual?" Worf asked. "I wasn't aware of that. Nor was I aware an animal would be sacrificed for the event or I would have come earlier to see it."

"Maybe?" Ned had no idea. "You wanted to see them kill the food?"

Worf gave Ned a look. "Doesn't everyone?"

"No!" Ned said quickly, shaking his head. "No, because there's...things and I don't need to be around that."

"I see," Worf said briskly. "I apologize. I did not mean to disturb you. I just assumed that it was part of the festivities."

"Well, it might be," Ned said, squirming a bit uncomfortably just thinking about being around dead things. That could only lead to bad. "Just not for me. I don't wanna watch that."

Worf looked at Ned carefully. "Are you this squeamish regarding all animals that you eat?"

"It's not a squeamish thing," Ned explained. "It's just...a me thing. I'm not a big fan of the take a big knife and go get your dinner approach."

"You prefer others to do your slaughtering for you," Worf said with a nod. "Perfectly understandable for a human."

Ned shuddered a bit. "I...just don't even want to think about that."

"I see," Worf replied gruffly. "Then perhaps you should consider being a vegetarian. Especially if you have a weak stomach."

"I probably should," Ned said thoughtfully. "My stomach's not that weak though."

"Really."

Worf seemed to have some doubts about that.

"I'm not squeamish," Ned insisted. "Just cautious."

"Of course. A wise decision."

Again.. doubts.

"Yeah." Ned nodded his agreement with that statement. "I'm not squeamish. I don't like seeing plants die either. It's sad."

"So the plants on your world are also sentient? Someone else seemed to think the same thing at the Arms shop in town."

"Well, they live and die," Ned said, shrugging a shoulder. "I mean, they don't talk."

Pause.

"Here they might. Maybe."

"Everything dies," Worf said gravely. "Among my people it is our hope that we die in battle and with honor."

"I don't think plants go off to battle," Ned said thoughtfully. "If they do, they don't put those in history books."

"Plants on Earth do not battle," Worf clarified. "You are still thinking global."

"Well, yeah, why would I think anything else when I've never been anywhere else but Earth?" Ned said. "My mind doesn't expand that far."
