Luau: The Main Campfire: Friday Evening

The irony of having a Hawaiian luau while in Greece probably hadn't escaped anyone. But given that the majority of the students probably couldn't pinpoint Hawaii on the map, it didn't seem like that was enough of a reason to cancel what had become a summer tradition.

So in the early evening, the main campfire was transformed into a party place with coconuts, grass skirts, and leis for everyone. A pig was slowly roasting over the fire, and a huge ~~moddable~~ buffet spread out to the flagpole.

A dance floor was set up, and Hawaiian music was playing, but there was also plenty of grass spread with blankets for the less-rhythm-inclined.

"Some of the events aren't actively traumatizing," Luke said quickly. "Just cute. One weekend all of the teachers turned into the child versions of themselves."

"It's the whole changing part," Ned pointed out. "I'd like to stay me."

"I can understand that," Luke said with a nod. "You're used to being you."

"For eighteen years, yeah," Ned said. "People keep telling me I'll get used to it."

Ned so did not believe that.

"It takes a while," Luke said. "At the beginning there's just such a lot that's different. I was from a very small desert planet--I was excited about unlimited hot water. Hearing some of the more eccentric parts of this island wasn't all that helpful to me. I really am sorry for adding to that burden."

"I'll survive."

Unless he ended up like that pig.

"Hopefully."

"You'll be fine," Luke said encouragingly. "And this time next year, you'll be at the luau wondering what's so weird about this place."

Or curled under his bed refusing to come out. Luke ignored that option.

Ned shook his head. "Only here for a year. I'm a senior. One year and gone."

"I graduated a few weeks back," Luke offered. "I stuck around a little longer for the free food."

Ned eyed the roasting pig. "The food that isn't made of people."

"I promise none of the food is made of people," Luke said.

"I never thought I'd be relieved about something like that," Ned said.

"So where are you from?" Luke asked, trying to steer the conversation away from the crazy and strange.

"Coeur d'Coeurs," he said. "It's not near here."

"Was it closer when we weren't off the coast of Greece?" Luke asked.

"I think so," Ned said, thinking about it. "Yeah, it was. There wasn't an ocean between me and Coeur d'Coeurs until the island moved."

"My geography of this world isn't as comprehensive as it should be," Luke admitted. "What's Coeur d'Couers like?"

"It's bright," Ned said. It seemed to always be his answer to that question. "Colorful, I mean. The sun doesn't shine differently there or anything."

"Color is good," Luke said. "I grew up in the desert--not a lot of it to be found."

"I've never been to a desert," Ned admitted. "Is it really as hot as they say?"

"Yes," Luke said, "or at least mine was. It had two suns."
