Luau: The Main Campfire: Friday Evening

The irony of having a Hawaiian luau while in Greece probably hadn't escaped anyone.  But given that the majority of the students probably couldn't pinpoint Hawaii on the map, it didn't seem like that was enough of a reason to cancel what had become a summer tradition.

So in the early evening, the main campfire was transformed into a party place with coconuts, grass skirts, and leis for everyone.  A pig was slowly roasting over the fire, and a huge moddable buffet spread out to the flagpole.

A dance floor was set up, and Hawaiian music was playing, but there was also plenty of grass spread with blankets for the less-rhythm-inclined.

[OOC:  YAAAAAY LUAU!  Students, teachers, and townies all welcome!]

Ned eyed her quietly and tried to make a mental guess of where her tattoo might be.

"Where's yours?"

"It's kinda a private tattoo," she said, nodding seriously.

He eyed her and then shook his head. "I respect it's privacy then." He was really curious though. "What's it of?"

"A compression coil," she said, naming the first thing she could think of.

"I don't know what that is but I bet you wear it well," he said quietly, blushing and looking away quickly.

And for some reason that made her blush. Huh.

"It's part of a engine," she told him, like he would know what it might look like. "And thanks."

"Important part?" Ned asked curiously, still looking at his feet.

"It's necessary for the grav thrust, power plant, and life support," she explained, almost kind of shyly. And now she was feeling bad about lying about having a tattoo. "It makes sure people can live on a ship, for one thing."

"I have no idea what you just said," he admitted, half smiling, "but it sounded very important."

"I could try to explain," she said thoughtfully, "or we could dance. That sounds more fun."

"Dance?" His voice hadn't cracked that badly. "I don't know how to dance. At all."

"Well, I don't know none of those fancy dances like they do in the core," she admitted, "but anyone can dance. Come on, it's easy. Remember, the image of you dancin' is supposed to help me keep bad dreams away?"

He had said that, hadn't he? Stupid words. They always came back to bite him in the ass.

"I remember." He wasn't going to lie to her. "Um. What kind of dancing is it?"

"The easy kind," she promised, holding out her hand.

On another day, he might have actually taken it. On another day, he wouldn't have gotten confronted with the harshest truth of them all earlier, though, and he stared at her hand for far too long before looking down and blushing furiously.

"I--dancing is hard," he stuttered, cheeks bright red and hands curled so tightly into fists that he could feel his nails biting into his skin.

Kaylee watched him for a moment, bit her lip, and dropped her hand. He was all red. "...want a marshmallow instead?"

"You have some?" Ned asked, peeking up at her from where he'd been staring hard at the sand.

"I can get some," she replied. "You can show me how to toast 'em right."

"Okay," he said, raising his head some more, glancing at her briefly before looking at his shoes. "I can do that. We'll need to find a stick too. Not too long or we'll end up with a crispy stick with a white sticky hand at the end."

"Wait right here," she said with a quick, cheerful smile, as she hurried off to get some marshmallows and sticks. As soon as her back was turned, she let herself worry a little bit about what was wrong with him, but it weren't like her heart was set on dancing, anyway.

"Bad day," Ned mumbled when she was out of earshot, dropping his head into his hands and wondering if this would be the day the world would swallow him up whole. Digby trotted back over and laid across his feet.
