Shop Class 5/01

"Good morning kids and welcome to your final exam," Mac says sadly. "Before we get started I just wanted to say that you kids were great this semester. You make it easy and enjoyable to be a teacher."

Mac pulls out his remote and fiddles with it a bit and the class room rearranges itself so that there are multiple walk-in safes for everyone to use.

"Your exam today is that you will be tied up and placed in a safe which you will need to break out of. The safes are currently under construction so inside you will find various cleaning solutions and a toolbox. Nothing in the toolbox alone will get you out of the safe, but a combination of tools or chemicals should help you find a way out. If you want you can team up with someone or go it alone. Or even handwave it."

"Finally I'd like to say this is my final class here at Fandom High. I've had a blast teaching everyone and I wish you luck in the years to come."

"Hey Mac?" Nadia said, before going to do the exam (and she'd totally known they'd end up with some weird assignment, dammit). "Can you help me with something?"

She held out her arms, which were each wrapped in rather impressive looking ace-bandage-and-tape things that looked like they'd been hacked at with a dull saw. "I can't get them off."

Ivanova arrived half an hour late and sporting a very impressive black eye. Except by this point it was more like a green and purple eye. Which is ironic as green and purple was what got her into this whole mess in the first place.

She sheepishly slipped up to Mac. "Sorry for being late, sir."

John's in his safe all tied up. It's really quite weird. Wriggling over to the toolbox, he manages to opens it with his fingers and digs around for a screwdriver or something of that nature.

Finding a screwdriver, he works it against the ropes tying him together. He hits his wrists a few times but manages to loosen the ropes enough so he can slide his arms out of them.

Now, to get out of the safe.

Since there's no electricity in the safe, drilling is out. He tries to take the screwdriver and uses a hammer to pound in the place where the lock might be. No dice.

Tunneling out of the safe is also out because hello, floor.

John scratches his head.

He tries something different. He reaches for the knife and tries to work it into the safe material, making a small hole. John uses the screwdriver to widen it so he can wedge the screwdriver in. The hammer gets cracked against the screwdriver and the screwdriver does go further into the safe material.

Unfortunately, he's not in the right place. He does this seven times before he finally hits the spot where the lock is. He hammers the screwdriver through the lock, breaking the lock and popping open the safe.

Sam quietly took her seat in the chair and waited to be tied up so she could complete the assignment.

No reason why she couldn't look at Mac. Or why she was blushing bright red. Really.

Right. So. Nadia is tied up in a locked safe and has to escape. It can obviously be done, or Mac wouldn't have assigned it unless he just wanted to shut her up, she just had to figure out how.

Couldn't be that hard. Let's see, what would Perth Tristow do?

Have some funky gadget with a laser attachment in her pocket so she could cut a hole in the safe wall.

Right. AKA wasn't going to help.

First thing's first, and that's the ropes. Fortunately, her leatherman (which is totally in her back pocket) does have a blade made to cut through rope.

Ow

If she can just stop accidentally stabbing herself with it.

Duo doesn't even pause to consider the absurdity that he's actually been tied up and locked in a jail cell twice before, but instead bemoans the fact that he probably can't use the explosives and lockpicks he keeps in his braid because that would totally be cheating. Instead, he uses the materials provided and gets himself out no problem, because this time there aren't any armed guards waiting outside to deal with.

Xander isn't more than five or eight minutes late. Really when you take into account the party crasher he brought along with him and divide up the minutes, it's only 2.5 or four minutes each and that's not very late at all.

"Tied up and--- no seriously, Mac, what's the real final?"

Stark flailed a little at the idea of being tied up in a safe and stared at the safe warily for a long time. Eventually he sat down and got tied up. Then he was tied up in a safe and no longer able to flail. Once he accepted that he couldn't flail, thinking got a lot easier.

Getting out of the ropes wasn't too problematic. There were plenty of sharp edges to choose from on the SAK that would get rid of that obstacle. He even managed to utilize them without slicing himself in the process.

So now he was just in a big box and needed a way out. Been here before...

"Whattodo, whattodo..." He paused to glare at the roll of duct tape, which seemed to be completely frelling useless in this situation. Then he turned his attention to the cleaning supplies. There had to be something in here that would blow up. Of course, that might end up blowing him up too, so that could be a problem. Maybe something to eat through the metal?

So he started playing around with the cleaning solutions. After a few minutes he was giggling. Clearly having that many chemicals open in a poorly ventilated space was not the best idea. Eventually, even through all the giggling, he had something that seemed to be corrosive and applied it to the back of the door.

Then he waited.

Then he hit the back of the door with a hammer and watched as some metal fell away, revealing the lock. The lock was poked at with a screwdriver, and after much more giggling, he was free. And giggling.

As soon as Kawalsky heard about the project, he put his Swiss Army knife in his back pocket. Once he was securely tied, he stretched into his back pocket, got the knife out and cut away at the ropes until his arms were free. He then untied the rest of the ropes.

First of all he used his knife to pry away several panels until he found the panel behind the lock. He returned to the toolbox and chemicals and got some corrosive cleaner paste. He smothered the lock with it and then added a mixture of chemicals that would either melt the lock or suffocate him with the fumes.

Thankfully, the former happened and as soon as he heard it, he covered his mouth, pushed forward and the door opened.

Sam walked up to Mac's desk after everyone had left. She put the extra knife back on the desk. "Thanks, Mac, but I already have three."

"Have a good life, and stay safe, okay?" On any other day, she probably would have hugged him goodbye. Now she wasn't so sure.

No longer entirely high off of cleaning fumes, Stark still grinned crookedly at Mac as he took the SAK.

"Thank you. For this. And the class. The class was...interesting. Very interesting. And fun? Yes. Fun. Thank you."
