Shop Class 5/01

"Good morning kids and welcome to your final exam," Mac says sadly. "Before we get started I just wanted to say that you kids were great this semester. You make it easy and enjoyable to be a teacher."

Mac pulls out his remote and fiddles with it a bit and the class room rearranges itself so that there are multiple walk-in safes for everyone to use.

"Your exam today is that you will be tied up and placed in a safe which you will need to break out of. The safes are currently under construction so inside you will find various cleaning solutions and a toolbox. Nothing in the toolbox alone will get you out of the safe, but a combination of tools or chemicals should help you find a way out. If you want you can team up with someone or go it alone. Or even handwave it."

"Finally I'd like to say this is my final class here at Fandom High. I've had a blast teaching everyone and I wish you luck in the years to come."

"There is that, yeah." Bridge nods. "Wanna team up, then?"

Xander eyes him. "Suuuuure? I...guess? Though since you're not getting a grade, your motivation for getting tied up in a safe with me would be... right, forget I asked."

Bridge just grins. And shrugs.

Once they're handwavily tied up and locked in the safe, Xander's not doing so much eyeing. Largely because they're back to back. "Ok, so wild guess here? But the solution we used last time we were trapped in a room probably not working this time."

Bridge snickers. "Well, you never know, with this place."

"Not until we get untied, anyhow; unless you neglected to mention having prehensile lips."

Bridge snorts. "No, that is not one of my talents. So I guess we'll just have to work on the getting untied part first." He wriggles a bit in an attempt to loosen the ropes.

"Funny thing about being a vampire slayer's sidekick?" Xander twists his arm behind his back, then twists it again, this time at an angle that...should really hurt liek whoa. Actually it does, kinda, but only for a second.

And then it's free. "You get tied up a hell of a lot more than you'd expect for living in the suburbs, and enjoy it a hell of a lot less."

A bit more wriggling, and now the ropes are a bit looser.

"Yeah, it's... actually pretty commonplace for Rangering, too," Bridge says. "They make us take classes."

"Huh. There's a thought for the summer." Xander twists and frees his other arm, wincing a bit as he scrapes his elbow on the rope, then turns to help Bridge with the knots on his. "'Cept I couldn't really pull off a whole class on escaping from stuff. Especially since half the time my solution is 'get rescued.'"

Bridge tilts his head at Xander. "You're teaching a class this summer?" he asks, curiously.

"Eh, not a class, exactly? The seniors staying over the summer are supposed to do this camp counselor workshoppy thing, along with the teachers and some of the locals, I guess. Damn if I can really think of anything I could teach people, though."

"Huh," Bridge says. "That sounds... kinda cool, actually. And you'll think of something. Just as long as it's not, like, underwater basketweaving."

"God, no." Xander shrugs the rest of the way out of his ropes and stands up. "I can't make a non-lopsided basket to save my life."

He opens up the toolbox provided and pokes through it thoughtfully. "What d'you think about underwater tv repair, though?"

"Depends. Are we talking the repair of underwater televisions, or the repair of televisions taking place underwater?" Bridge asks, moving over so that he can see what supplies are available.

"Regular TVs underwater, first, I'd say. Then the other later. Gotta save something for the advanced course. Weed out the weaklings based on who fries themselves in the first couple weeks."

Xander lifts up a bottle of something flammable from the chemical shelf, and eyes the sprinkler system. "I've seen this work before? But not in a locked safe. Set that off without getting the door open and we'd be trying out our underwater breathing skills. In theory."

"Okay. So let's avoid the flammable stuff then," Bridge says. "Maybe something corrosive?"

"Oh sure, think of that now, when we're in here, and the coffee's out there..."

Actually like most things Mac does, his coffee's good, but it's kind of an impossible joke to pass up.

Bridge laughs. "We never got coffee, last semester. Well, there was the time we had to build coffee-makers..." he rifles through a few things, before settling on something with about five different warning labels. "Maybe this?"

"Yeah, we had to do that too. I ended up using my shirt for a filter and smelling like Jake-bait for the rest of the day."

Xander eyes the bottle Bridge is holding. "Assuming that doesn't eat through your hands before it eats through the lock? I'd say we're golden." He scratches his head. "Well, maybe silver; Mac did say none of the chemicals or tools would get us out on their own."

"Well, at least the gloves offer an extra layer of protection," Bridge says. "And... okay, yeah, but if we can at least get this to eat through part of the door, we can get to the lock, maybe?"

"Point." Xander would offer to do the chemical pouring? But there was a point about the gloves too.

He does manage to locate a metal funnel among the bottles, though, and holds it up. "Might eat this before it eats the door, but eh. Better than dumping it directly onto our shoes...."

Bridge takes the funnel and starts pouring. Remarkably, none of it ends up on *him*, and a minute or so later they're left with a corroded funnel and a slightly-smoking safe door.

Xander studies the lock.

Then returns to the toolbox, and comes back with a screwdriver, and a hammer.

He holds them up, in that order. "Subtlety or violence? Got a preference?"

"Hmmm. Difficult question. Definitely a fan of subtle, but violence has it's uses." A fan of subtle, maybe, but not always the best at employing it, 'cause the next thing he says is, "you know, we never did try the kissing solution."
