Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Throughout the lawn, tables and chairs had been set up and scattered, some out in the bright, sunny center of everything, and some in the darker, more remote areas.

Eat up, folks! Don't let that food go to waste!

[OCD up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Nathan couldn't figure out how he'd ended up in America.

At a school where they seemed to be expecting him. The only saving grace was that everything was outside so that the buzzing in his head was lessened somewhat by the surrounding trees and grass and dirt.

Still, Nathan felt dizzy and confused. He hadn't removed the hoodie, sunglasses, scarf or gloves despite the sudden onslaught of warmer weather. No one here pinged as a Hunter just yet but he wasn't letting his guard down...even if he was going to eat some of the food.

He hadn't had anything this grand in long time. Probably forever.

"Are you new too?" Anders asked, for no particular reason except the boy looked like he could use someone to talk to. "You look about as overwhelmed as I feel."

"I was just in Scotland," Nathan answered, sounding a little dumbfounded. "And now I'm here."

Which meant that, yes, he was new. And confused. And overwhelmed.

"I don't know how that happened. Am I dreaming?"

"If you are, we all are," Anders said dryly. (He didn't know what Scotland was, but that was a separate subject and one that could be saved for later.) "I don't know what happened either. I stepped through a portal and ended up in a BWI, whatever that is. But so far almost everyone's been nice."

Anders was right about that. Besides the persistent buzzing that he'd gotten better at ignoring, no one seemed to really care who he was or what he was. It was an unfamiliar feeling.

"I don't think I've ever been to a party," he remarked after a moment. This seemed like a party that Jessica would be invited to while he stayed at home in his room. "There's a lot of food."

Another unfamiliar thing. He rubbed his wrists idly. "I don't know what a BWI is either." Nathan was sorry for the string of unconnected thoughts, Anders, but yes, things were strange.

"It was a big building and then we got in this moving ... thing to come here," Anders explained helpfully. "Like a wagon but without anything to pull it."

He glanced around the park. "This is a nice party," he decided. "More food than the ones at home, that's for sure."

Nathan's head bobbed in agreement. Food wasn't this plentiful where he'd come from and he'd had to work for hours before he tended to get fed. Having it offered so freely...Nathan couldn't help being slightly suspicious of the whole thing.

"Did you know you were coming here?" Nathan asked, curious if he was the only one to be here unexpectedly. "I had no idea yet my name -- " The only thing he could read, sadly. " -- is on the list over there and I seem to be expected. That can't be normal."

Someone else who was staying completely covered up. Kaylin nodded as she took some food from the table by him. "Have you been here long?"

Nathan shook his head just the tiniest bit.

"Long enough to know that I'm not sure if I want to stay," he eventually answered. "You?"

"I just arrived this morning," she admitted. "And I'm not sure I want to stay either, but I don't have a choice."

"How does that work?" Even when he'd been shackled and caged, he'd still had some choices. "Are you a prisoner?"

"No, but if I don't stay they wrong let me be a Hawk back home and that's all I want. "

She sighed. "So, I'm stuck here. How did you end up here?"

"From Scotland," he said, sliding a gloved hand through his hair. "The in between is a little fuzzy. I don't really know how I traveled across an ocean and ended up here."

Eleanor was watching for new students who seemed nervous, unsure of themselves, or, say, convinced that someone was after them. The boy who had thoroughly bundled himself up seemed a good candidate for that.

"Is everything all right?" she asked, hoping to seem casual.

"Not sure," he said, blinking at her behind his sunglasses. People approaching him was such a strange thing. There had been decrees to tell people to stay away from him and people here seemed to be approaching without a second thought.

"I don't know exactly how I got here," he admitted, glancing around. "Or where I actually am besides America."

It had been odd enough for Eleanor to get used to new people, and that was simply based on imposed isolation. It might take some doing for him to get used to it.

"It's a small island off the coast of Maryland," Eleanor shared, "but I doubt that's what you mean. I ended up here by accident myself. I went through a tunnel on a steamship outside Reykjavik and landed in that lounge at the airport."

"There was...a light in an alleyway in Scotland," he said, sharing despite his suspicion and paranoia. If she was a Hunter, she would have already made that known.

And her eyes didn't really give him the impression that she was a witch of any kind. He swallowed. "I went through it and I was here. How can that be, though?"

Eleanor's clipped British accent might not be helping his paranoia any. But she'd never so much as seen the British Isles; it was entirely inherited from her mother, who'd left London a long time ago.

Her eyes, however, were perfectly normal.

"I don't believe this island obeys the standard laws of physics," she said, calmly. "There are ... portals, that travel between dimensions. I'm not entirely sure what a dimension is, but it has something to do with quantum physics in ways that I can't quite comprehend."

Yeah, for someone who couldn't read and couldn't write, even the thought of quantum physics was going to zip over his head and run away quickly. He was quiet for a second.

"Magic?" That was what it seemed like to him, the transportation of one human across vast distances. "Is it magic?"

That made a little more sense but it also made the hair on the back of his neck stand on end.

Vider wasn't casing Soren's roommate. That would be weird. (She was totally casing Soren's roommate.) "Aren't you too warm?" asked the girl who ran a fever of a hundred and berserker most of the time.

Nathan was a little warm, yes, but warmth was better than the alternative in his mind.

"No," he replied with a shake of his head. "It's not that warm out here to me. It seems I just came from the winter season back where I'm from so maybe I'm still adjusting."

"Hm," Vider said with the skepticism of one who had been of Old Scandan stock and not that bothered by cold before becoming her own personal space heater. "Maybe. So you've gone through a time shift? That must be tough. I'm Vider, by the way. Vider Bearskin."

"Nathan." He nodded once at her. "And yes, it's hard. But, I didn't expect to be here in the first place. I just...arrived and was suddenly here and expected without any warning. That's the hard part for me."

"It happens," Vider told him, not without sympathy. "My little sibling is in the same boat." And rather distressed about it, so that also tracked. "This isn't the worst place to be, though." Most of the time.

"That's what I've been told," he answered, nodding. Jessica, he realized, would hate it here. Absolutely hate it but Arran would be eating it up.

He frowned at the thought of his brother but he kept it brief. "People are very helpful and they don't mind approaching me."

No one feared the repercussions.
