Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Throughout the lawn, tables and chairs had been set up and scattered, some out in the bright, sunny center of everything, and some in the darker, more remote areas.

Eat up, folks! Don't let that food go to waste!

[OCD up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Someone else who was staying completely covered up. Kaylin nodded as she took some food from the table by him. "Have you been here long?"

Nathan shook his head just the tiniest bit.

"Long enough to know that I'm not sure if I want to stay," he eventually answered. "You?"

"I just arrived this morning," she admitted. "And I'm not sure I want to stay either, but I don't have a choice."

"How does that work?" Even when he'd been shackled and caged, he'd still had some choices. "Are you a prisoner?"

"No, but if I don't stay they wrong let me be a Hawk back home and that's all I want. "

She sighed. "So, I'm stuck here. How did you end up here?"

"From Scotland," he said, sliding a gloved hand through his hair. "The in between is a little fuzzy. I don't really know how I traveled across an ocean and ended up here."

Kaylin just looked at him. "That sounds.. frightening. Not that I know where Scotland is - or really even where here is."

"I'm sure it could have been worse," Nathan said, shrugging his thin shoulders. "I wasn't hurt when I came out of whatever I stepped into and I was faraway from where I had been even if it wasn't a planned trip."

She hesitated, then went ahead and said it anyway. "So... it's better for you to be far away? Were you in a bad place?"

Nathan shrugged a shoulder, giving him time to contemplate an answer. "It wasn't the best place to be, no. But, I didn't have any money or anywhere to sleep so I probably could have been anywhere and felt that way."

Nathan was leaving a lot out, yes. His instinct told him to remain on his guard even if the buzzing in his head wasn't heralding the arrival of Hunters and their guns.

Kaylin nodded seriously. "I've been in that situation before. From the time I was five till I was thirteen actually."

Not that she looked much older than thirteen now, but she was. She was all of fifteen!

"Did you mean to come here?" he asked, another familiar question coming from him today. "Was it planned?"

"I didn't want>/i> to come here, but I was sent. So, I guess, yes, I meant or was meant to come here."

She sighed. "It's not where I want to be, but I don't have a choice."

"It seems like it could be worse, at least," Nathan remarked since he'd been hearing that from just about everyone who'd approached him. "That's what they've all been telling me. I don't know if it's true."

He'd see if he was still alive by tomorrow.

She nodded. "I suppose. At least the people here seem nice, I guess."
