Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Throughout the lawn, tables and chairs had been set up and scattered, some out in the bright, sunny center of everything, and some in the darker, more remote areas.

Eat up, folks! Don't let that food go to waste!

[OCD up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Eleanor's clipped British accent might not be helping his paranoia any. But she'd never so much as seen the British Isles; it was entirely inherited from her mother, who'd left London a long time ago.

Her eyes, however, were perfectly normal.

"I don't believe this island obeys the standard laws of physics," she said, calmly. "There are ... portals, that travel between dimensions. I'm not entirely sure what a dimension is, but it has something to do with quantum physics in ways that I can't quite comprehend."

Yeah, for someone who couldn't read and couldn't write, even the thought of quantum physics was going to zip over his head and run away quickly. He was quiet for a second.

"Magic?" That was what it seemed like to him, the transportation of one human across vast distances. "Is it magic?"

That made a little more sense but it also made the hair on the back of his neck stand on end.

"I don't know," Eleanor admitted. "Sometimes the difference between magic and science is what we understand and what we don't. Once we can explain it, it stops being magic and starts being another part of nature."

There was something reassuring and logical about science, when it wasn't being used to experiment on people without their consent.

"If it is magic, it's an especially benign form," she added. "Simply allowing for travel between great distances, that's all."

Nathan took a second to process that. He figured he'd need even longer and he didn't even know if he had the intelligence to truly contemplate it but he'd try.

"So, anyone can use those...things I used?" he asked, now wondering if he'd left behind traces of his presences and if Hunters were on their way right now. "It's for anyone?"

"That, I don't know," she said softly. She took an educated guess and decided it was best to reveal a bit of her own background. "I ... do know that the one I took closed directly behind me. It's been four months, and no one who was looking for me has given any indication of knowing where I am."

Nathan hedged, fingers rubbing the fabric of his scarf back and forth between his fingers.

"I'm Nathan." There were so many questions in his head but the only thing he managed to get out was his name. "Are you from England too?"

He had noticed the accent, yes.

Eleanor smiled, fondly, at that. "Afraid not," she said. "My mother grew up in London, and I've inherited her vocal inflections. I hope to travel there some day. Where is it you hail from?"

"A small town just a few hours from Wales on foot," Nathan shared. "I never got all that near London."

Too much noise, too many people, too young.

"I've heard it's quite the place, though. Big and busy."

"Have you ever seen Ireland?" Eleanor asked abruptly. "Ireland is on my list of places to see sometime. The pictures are lovely, but I've never been. You were just across the sea, weren't you?"

"I haven't," he said, shaking his head. "I've heard a bit about it just in passing and I've seen maps. I've managed to get to England, Scotland and Wales."

He paused for a second. "Wales is my favorite place, by far. I enjoy wide open spaces versus cities. I like being outside. Ireland might suit me there."
