Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Although the summer had been record-breakingly hot, the weather outside today was actually kind of pleasant. There was a cool breeze blowing across the lawn, making the smells of the buffet wander, and hopefully enticing people to come over to the school and welcome all the new folks.

The blue and gold tables and chairs had been set out as usual, along with nametags and the lists of Big and Little Siblings, and rooms and roommates for the new students. Assuming the shuttle arrived with all of the students and teachers in one piece, everything was set for the picnic to begin!

[OCD is up, have at it! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

The list of roommate assignments (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/pub?key=0AjS4JO1IqKXldDNFMTJwand1U2NseVUxV3NLT0UzQUE&output=html) was located in a prime spot on one of the tables. Current students who had been assigned new rooms and/or roommates had been handwavily informed of the change.

Shuttle? Done. Big sister? Met. Roommate? Coming up. And probably awkward. Jessica hadn't had any kind of a roommate since... well, ever. The closest she ever came was in Peter's memories when Gwen was staying with him and Aunt May.

A big locked chest where she stored her costume and SHIELD uniform would probably be a little obvious, wouldn't it? Dammit. Anyway. Roomie. Hopefully a dim, unquestioning roomie. With no romantic interest in girls. Look, if she was going to be wishing for a best case scenario, she was going to make everything as simple for her as possible.

Now she just had to figure out what kind of name "Atton" was and what one of those might look like.

Oh, great. There went Atton's nice, quiet, empty room. Sharing it with a girl wouldn't be so bad if she wasn't a kid, and dammit, he had not signed on for this.

... clearly Atton's thoughts were charitable as he approached. "So going by the name tag, you've got to be my new roommate."

Sigh.

"Yeah, same to you," Atton said. He was not really putting in an effort to sound like he meant it, but considering his usual tone of voice, it mostly just came out a neutral drawl. "You've got to be a new kid, right?"

Okay. Okay, Karolina was a girl's name -- that didn't look like it was necessarily a trend on this sheet of roommates, so Olive was kind of happy about that -- and also? Kind of a normal name. More normal than like, half the people she'd met so far, anyway.

So she looked around, trying to seem more confident than she was like, at all.

Oh, hey, Karolina was kind of doing the same! Also, kind of expecting to find out that this Olive person was going to turn out to be another floating notebook.

Once she found the right nametag, she bounced over and smiled. "Hi! Olive? I'm Karolina, I guess I'm your new roommate?"

Oh, god, a normal looking girl. Olive could deal, particularly after the insanity of the shuttle. "Hi," she said, offering a wavery little smile in return. "Are you new, too?"

Stiles had never had a roommate before but he spent the night at Scott's house a bunch of times so that counted as something, right? Right? Whatever, he didn't think he was that annoying (ha!) and he would undoubtedly be a pushover if his roommate happened to be bigger than he was.

Look, he was just going to be thankful Cade sounded like a guy's name because his anxiety couldn't take rooming with a girl.

"Hey, man. Cool nametag," Jim said, apple in hand. He took a bite of said apple and started grinning. "Haven't seen one of those since I was three."

Jim, you see, was not wearing a nametag. He'd shot that idea down as soon as he'd seen the stack when he'd arrived. Not a chance.

Jackson turned his not particularly amused gaze on Jim. Actually, it was kind of a critical gaze as well.

Also, it served the function of looking him over for a nametag. Not finding one didn't make him any more inclined to be nice. "Mm, fascinating," he said, a little dryly. "Does that line ever work for you?"

They were going to be the best of friends!

Yeul found her name on the roommates list right away (it was easy when she was first on it) and wondered who Darcy was.

As she read further down the list, she wondered if Darcy was a boy or a girl. (Given what some people were named in her world, it was a tough call.) With a shrug, as she couldn't change it, no matter how it fell out, Yeul began looking for her roommate.

Hopefully they were nice. Though, she knew, she couldn't change that either, if they weren't. Most people wouldn't find that comforting but Yeul did.

Darcy had in fact noticed that her roommate had moved out. Barely. "Paddra? Pa-a-da-ra? Some combination of the above?" She tried out loud, reading the new roommate lists.

Chaz read the list and ran through his brain to try to figure out what kind of a name Korra was. He finally settled on "unusual".

It was a perfectly ordinary Water Tribe name. Not that Korra had an opinion on anyone's name, since she couldn't actually read the list. These people used weird letters.

Chaz had taken to reading people's name tags in order to find Korra. It took him a while since he was first checking the guys. "Uh...you're a girl!"
