Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Although the summer had been record-breakingly hot, the weather outside today was actually kind of pleasant. There was a cool breeze blowing across the lawn, making the smells of the buffet wander, and hopefully enticing people to come over to the school and welcome all the new folks.

The blue and gold tables and chairs had been set out as usual, along with nametags and the lists of Big and Little Siblings, and rooms and roommates for the new students. Assuming the shuttle arrived with all of the students and teachers in one piece, everything was set for the picnic to begin!

[OCD is up, have at it! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Oh." Oh, well, now Olive felt like a total asshole for bringing that up. Oops. "Hey, that's okay," she offered, in a desperate gambit to not make her brand new roommate uncomfortable. "I was kind of expelled from my last school."

And here she'd been meaning to keep that a secret, but hey, it might be best to get that out of the way, too.

She kind of spread her arms in a slightly-listless 'ta da' sort of motion, and smiled a little nervously.

"Oh." There was no judging in that 'oh', either. Considering Karolina had been a runaway for a while there, it wasn't like she had the cleanest of records. "What for?"

Wait.

"I mean, you don't have to tell me."

"Long story, but the big thing was that I crashed a pep rally with a burlesque song-and-dance number," Olive admitted, a little sheepish.

It had been awesome.

"So, you know. No judgey on this end."

Karolina grinned a little bit. Because that did sound pretty awesome. And really not that bad, by her standards.

"No judgey," she promised with another soft chuckle. "But I, um, I should probably tell you something about me because you're going to find out about it eventually..."

Well. That was a sort of alarming statement. Olive just raised her eyebrows expectantly. "You're not like, a closet reality TV fan or something, are you? Because I love me some Tyra but the Kardashians are gonna have to go under irreconcilable differences."

"No-o, it's not that." Those Kardashians were pretty scary, come on. "But, you know, that thing about how this place is a little weird? I... I'm probably a little weird too."

Actually she was a lot weird. But she didn't want to share that she felt that way with a stranger.

Okay. No judgey, no judgey, noooooo judgey, but: "What kind of weird?" she asked, as nonchalantly as she could.

She was just gonna take whatever it was in stride. Possibly freak out privately later, but hey, her big sister was from 1915. There were aliens here. She could deal with it, but it was all just a...process.

Well, she was allowed to freak out. Karolina just... preferred she didn't. Because that would have been awkward.

She hazarded a shy smile. "Yeah, I think so."

"Then...sweet." See, she could act normally about this. This was Olive being normal! She was getting better about it. "What is it?"

"I can fly and, um, manipulate solar energy?"

She fidgeted a little with her bracelet but yeah, she didn't want to pull that much attention to herself during a picnic.

"I can show you some other time."

"Yeah, um, no pressure," Olive replied with what she hoped was a comforting smile. "I can't do anything. I mean, I can sew. But that's not a power so much as a...life skill. Flying's like a whole other thing."

"I can't really sew," Karolina offered, because... It seemed like a thing to say. Karolina was yet to really master the whole 'dealing with newbies' thing, yep.

"Powers are kind of a... pretty frequent thing here so I thought I should get it out there in the open at the start."

Unlike the part where she was an alien.

"Yeah, there's been some of that already," Olive said, exhaling a little. "I'm adjusting. Sorry. It's not you, or anything, it's just...not what I'm used to, you know? Like, I always kind of thought that stuff was just in comic books and movies and stuff, and, yeah turns out not so much."
