Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Although the summer had been record-breakingly hot, the weather outside today was actually kind of pleasant. There was a cool breeze blowing across the lawn, making the smells of the buffet wander, and hopefully enticing people to come over to the school and welcome all the new folks.

The blue and gold tables and chairs had been set out as usual, along with nametags and the lists of Big and Little Siblings, and rooms and roommates for the new students. Assuming the shuttle arrived with all of the students and teachers in one piece, everything was set for the picnic to begin!

[OCD is up, have at it! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Yeul found her name on the roommates list right away (it was easy when she was first on it) and wondered who Darcy was.

As she read further down the list, she wondered if Darcy was a boy or a girl. (Given what some people were named in her world, it was a tough call.) With a shrug, as she couldn't change it, no matter how it fell out, Yeul began looking for her roommate.

Hopefully they were nice. Though, she knew, she couldn't change that either, if they weren't. Most people wouldn't find that comforting but Yeul did.

Darcy had in fact noticed that her roommate had moved out. Barely. "Paddra? Pa-a-da-ra? Some combination of the above?" She tried out loud, reading the new roommate lists.

Yeul ducked her head, smiling a little at the attempt to pronounce her name. "You had it closer the first time," she advised softly.

"Paddra?" Darcy tried again. "I don't think I've ever seen a name like that. I'm Darcy. You get the half the room that my old roommate has vacated."

"It's nice to meet you. Please, call me Yeul," she said. It sounded like 'yule'. "Have you been a student here for long?"

"Like the log?" Darcy checked. "And I came in for the spring semester last time so like, three quarters of a year? And the weird still just avoids me." She sounded oddly disappointed by this.

"I don't know about the log," she admitted, "but another girl asked if it was like Christmas? Does that help?"

Yeah, Yeul didn't really know anything about this world.

"Is this place supposed to be weird?"

"It's a Christmas log!" Darcy said cheerfully. "Yeah, like, people turn into kids, there's a talking pony, and aliens, and random government mooks who stole my iPod and never gave it back."

"That wasn't very nice of them," Yeul observed. "Does all of that... happen often? I don't believe the brochure said anything about this. Is it safe?"

"Yeah, tell me about it." Darcy said darkly. "And yeah, totally safe." This was said very casually.

"I'm sorry for your loss," she added politely, despite not knowing what an iPod was. "I suppose if the weird goes back to normal it might be safe enough. Have people really turned into children?"

Yeul was uncertain she believed Darcy but talking as if she did had never been a problem.

"It was painful, but I mustered on." Darcy informed her. "Kids, ponies, other stuff. This island is nuts. I got sucked into a locker for a week!"

"And no one heard you trying to get out?" Yeul asked, startled. Her roommate didn't seem like the sort to just sit there and take a situation like that. "How did that even happen?"

"Wellllll, I wasn't in the locker. The locker kidnapped me and dumped me in a pirate celebration. And then it tossed me out of a vending machine. It was a weird week." She summarized.

"But you weren't hurt?"

It was puzzling, entirely so, but if it was harmless...

Darcy shook her head. "Nah, still in one piece."
