Ethics [Tuesday, September 6, 2011, 1st period]

Today's class was taking place in the Danger Shop where there wasn't a desk to be found: only a cloudless day, a beating sun and apparent kilometers of oceans surrounding five small dingies that were neatly labeled with four or five students' names, or in one case, four students and one lemur.

Anakin's voice came over the speaker system: "Welcome to your first practical Ethics class. You've all been shipwrecked. In a moment, the dingy you're in will be the only thing you will see. There is no land for hundreds of kilometers, no fresh water, and you've run out of food. The only resources you have are the other people--or in one case, the people and lemur--you have in the boat. Will you turn to cannibalism? If so, who will be the first to go?"

Hope you weren't hungry for breakfast, class.

"Again, if you'd prefer not to participate in this class, shake your head strongly and you will be taken out of the simulation."

With that the students were apparently left to their own devices.

Peter... had gotten a little carried away writing this morning. In his defense, writing a peace treaty that was supposed to restore the entire planet to political and military stability kind of took precedence over Ethics class, at least in his opinion.

He came to a pause two steps into the Danger Shop, and blinked at the ocean. "...Okay then."

See, and this was the problem with simulations that Rosella was talking about last year. She knew it was fake, and she tried to suspend her disbelief, but she'd had breakfast before coming into class, so she may not have food now, but she knew she could go for much longer, and this really wasn't that much different from being shipped off to Tamir and being expected to figure things out there, too.

She sighed, and then shrugged, because she figured it could at least be an interesting exercise in sailing and getting to know whatever was stuck on the dingy with her.

Oh, look, it was a way the plane crash could have been worse (that wasn't 'we all died instead of most of us'). Petra thought really hard about opting out, but then decided to try to keep everyone alive instead.

For some unknown reason, Lex had the oddest feeling of deja vu.

He pulled off his jacket and used it as a makeshift shade. Sunburn, even the simulated kind, was even less fun when you were bald.

Kenzi looked at her fellow students, then the water. "Please tell me one of you has a superpower to create food. Somehow." She had one idea. And it was gross.

"I don't know about you guys," Jack said as he sat down in the boat. "But I'd prefer not to eat anyone. I don't suppose anyone has a fishing pole?"

"Okay," Petra said as she dug through her bag. "I can make a fishing line out of floss--we can braid it to be thicker--and I have safety pins for hooks. Damn, I wish I'd worn earrings with hooks today. We can make lines out of seaweed, too, and PS seaweed is edible. I know how to make a desalination still, but with what we've got and the amount of space it might be tricky." Since returning from the island, Petra's purse was basically a survival kit in and of itself.

"Until we can get that going, I have three protein bars, one chocolate bar, and a bottle of water, so we need to do some serious rationing."

Eating someone was not even on Petra's agenda.

Well usually stranded on a boat with a bunch of girls wouldn't be a problem for Luke. Of course now it was a bit of trouble considering cannibalism was on the line and he had to be a gentleman or something.

Actually, screw that, he didn't want to be eaten.

"I'm gonna take it using powers would be cheating on this thing." Because if it wasn't cheating food and getting off the island would be nooooo problem.

Anakin has included the nutritional information of lemurs in the boat just to be thorough.

So... okay, this was probably the weirdest class Annie had been in yet, just for the subject matter. Ignore that she'd taken a summer of zombies class and was on her second class with the talking pony. Eating someone had never been considered in those. Not getting eaten, sure, but...

"Where did he get the nutritional information of lemurs?" Annie wondered.

Because sorry, Topher, you were so going to be the first to go, no matter what the caloric content.

There was no fucking way Nathan was going first. No fucking way. He could maybe be convinced to eat someone if he were high on something really fucking powerful but with his immortality, getting eaten probably wouldn't be a bad thing since he'd come back.

Still, he wasn't letting that happen and was sitting in a spot where he could keep an eye on everyone lest they make a move unexpectedly.

The problem of the logistics of actually catching the fish hadn't occurred to him yet.
