Ethics [Tuesday, September 6, 2011, 1st period]

Today's class was taking place in the Danger Shop where there wasn't a desk to be found: only a cloudless day, a beating sun and apparent kilometers of oceans surrounding five small dingies that were neatly labeled with four or five students' names, or in one case, four students and one lemur.

Anakin's voice came over the speaker system: "Welcome to your first practical Ethics class. You've all been shipwrecked. In a moment, the dingy you're in will be the only thing you will see. There is no land for hundreds of kilometers, no fresh water, and you've run out of food. The only resources you have are the other people--or in one case, the people and lemur--you have in the boat. Will you turn to cannibalism? If so, who will be the first to go?"

Hope you weren't hungry for breakfast, class.

"Again, if you'd prefer not to participate in this class, shake your head strongly and you will be taken out of the simulation."

With that the students were apparently left to their own devices.

Mercy could always shift into a coyote and eat him should the need arise, but she didn't want to mention that.

"If we could teach him to fish, that would definitely be helpful."

"Okay, so we teach the lemur to fish," Annie said, wondering whether there was something like a tiny lemur-sized life jacket around. "But if something happens to him, Im saying right now: I call not it on getting eaten."

Lemur-Topher squawked unhappily. He didn't want to be eaten, and so he jutted his lemur nose in Annie's direction. Obviously she should be the first one to be eaten. Just because.

"Not it? Are we 8 now?" Richie shook his head slightly. "If we got shipwrecked, shouldn't the coast guard or somebody be looking for us? Cannibalism seems like a pretty drastic step when we've only been out here 5 minutes."

"Hey, I didn't mean to go to the cannibalism place," Annie protested. "All I did was note that the lemur has nutritional information!"

"You get the feeling our professor here likes messing with us?" Richie asked. "I figure the lemur is too small to be worth eating, even with nutritional information. And he's really a student, right?" Richie paused. Yes, he really had just seriously asked if a small fuzzy animal was really a classmate. That was never going to not be weird. Moving on. "What if we eat him and then we find out later he could have saved us all once he turned back?" Mostly Richie didn't think there was enough meat on the Topher-lemur to be worth the effort. Maybe as an appetizer.

"Well, do we have anything else we could eat?" Juliet wondered, patting her pockets. "I have ....a lip gloss. But I like this color."

She sighed. "This is so dumb. I'm not even hungry yet."

"Right," Richie said. "Why are we worried about eating right now? Shouldn't we be working on not being in the boat when we are hungry?"
